Director of Photography Laurent Barès, AFC’s newest active member

La Lettre AFC n°239

[ English ] [ français ]

During one of its last meetings, the Board of Directors of the AFC decided to welcome director of photography Laurent Barès to the AFC as our newest active member. Yves Cape, AFC, SBC, has written the customary introduction.
We all bid Laurent a warm welcome.

Laurent and I were first assistants during the same time, and then later, we shared the same assistants.
Logically, I kept tabs on his career and his contacts. After working as an assistant with François Catonné, he briefly worked with Roman Polanski and Tonino Delli Colli on Death and the Maiden. Because it is not the quantity, but rather the quality, of one’s relationships that matters, the brief time he spent with these two men truly left a lasting impression on him.
Afterwards, he was director of photography for Gérard Mordillat, Lucas Belvaux, and Xavier Gens. It was the dozen of very well received advertisements he filmed with Rémy Belvaux that really caused his career to take off.
He has been making genre films for the last few years, which have allowed him free rein to explore more expressionist, less naturalist, cinematography. This has also allowed him to meet a young generation of directors.
Laurent loves discussing the cinema ; he is passionate about his profession. Now that he is one of us, he will be able to enrich us with his experiences.
Welcome to you, Laurent.

Yves Cape, AFC, SBC.
