We shot the film entirely in this neighborhood. The gear was stored in a closed-down restaurant and transported by carts from one location to another. Our activity resembled that of the people of the neighborhood, we each had our carts, and we became a part of the tumultuous life of Saint Denis street.
The image-making approach defined itself quickly, imposed by the locations : a very simple image, raw, a handheld camera with long lenses (thanks to Pierre Weité for the focus), very little lighting. All the locations (Chinese restaurants, workshops, etc..) were « pre-lit » with only a few necessary « touch-ups » during shooting.
Inspired by the American cinema of the Seventies, Frédéric wanted to make a film that was very cut-up, frenetic, anchored in reality, and I think his approach paid off. »
