AFC-related activities

During its December 2017 meeting, the board of the AFC decided to admit the FilmLight corporation as an Associate Member. FilmLight is specialized in the development of tools that are essential to digital image making. Nathalie Durand, AFC, who, along with Antoine Roche, AFC, was FilmLight’s sponsor, introduces FilmLight below. We bid our newest Associate Member a warm welcome.

Sunday, November 26^th. Back to Paris. Cold but sunny weather. Through the window I see trees loosing their leaves. Still fresh from Camerimage, I will get on the writing of the editorial of the monthly AFC Letter. The phone is ringing. A call from Rémy Chevrin. It’s a terrible and inconceivable news: our friend Matthieu Poirot-Delpech left us, taken from us brutally. I cannot believe it.

I just ended reading the balance sheet of the CNC (National Administration Center of Cinema) for 2016. The news is pretty good. French cinema reached an all-time record of 213 million admissions. It is also a world-wide industry with a production level of 283 films in 2016.

I have just heard of the death of Jeanne Moreau. I encountered her, when I was A.C on the set of Joseph Losey’s Mr Klein. I had great admiration for her, she the heroine of the French New Wave that has so much influenced my generation.

In the dog days of parisian summer, as it is in the current situation, we can hide in a movie theater, it is a privileged place where, with other "film buffs", we can share a good (or less-good) movie and little freshness. This is a moment of pleasure, we can even sometimes enrich with a chocolate ice cream, and repeat over and over all day long, as I have used to do it since my earliest childhood.

May began well. We escaped the b“rown swine” and its national / barbed wires Kulture. What, our friend Kees Van Oostrum, President of the ASC, immediately greeted by a strong: “Vive la France, congratulations! Let’s destroy populism”.

During its Annual General Assembly on Saturday, 11 March 2017, the AFC elected Richard Andry as its President. He will carry out his duties alongside his two co-presidents, Laurent Chalet and Vincent Mathias. Here, you can read Richard Andry’s first editorial, which was published in May’s AFC Newsletter.

Viva Indian Cinematography. That’s the title chosen by ISC, (Indian Society of Cinematographers) to happily announce on their Facebook page that AFC, the French Society of Cinematographers, have invited India as the Guest Country at the Micro Salon happening in Paris on 27^th January 2017, with official invitations sent to ISC, WICA (Western Indian Society of Cinematographers) & SICA (Southern Indian Cinematographers Association) .

For better or for worse, the 17^th annual Micro Salon was in the spirit of the times: the number of visitors at this year’s Micro Salon shrank. In the eyes of our partners with stands at the event this was a positive thing (although our sister-organizations on the other hand are always trying to reach a broader audience). The reason? Quite simple: fewer visitors means more quality time for discussion with the exhibitors!

Following the AFC’s Annual General Assembly held on Saturday, 12 March 2016, a board meeting was held in order to elect the members of the Executive Committee for 2016. Nathalie Durand, Laurent Chalet, and Vincent Mathias were reelected Co-Presidents of the AFC.

Having now reached the age of sixteen, the AFC Micro Salon is now in its best years! Mission accomplished once again, as the four levels of La fémis presented the skills and innovations of fifty-six of our attending associate members to the over 2,650 guests who attended the event.

The 2016 AFC Micro Salon, which takes place on 5-6 February at La fémis in Paris, on three floors: the ground level, the first basement floor (level -1), and the 2^nd floor. Access to all levels is via the central staircase inside the building. Below, you will find maps of the various exposition rooms and the location of each of the participating AFC associate members’ stands and a link toward the programme and schedule of the projections.

The AFC is pleased to announce its 16^th annual Micro Salon Show, which will take place - from Friday 5 February 2016 - 10am to 8pm

• at La fémis (6, rue Francœur, Paris 18).

These two days dedicated to the tools and technologies used by cinematographers are traditionally a time when manufacturers, distributors, renting companies, suppliers, and end users come together for lively and collegial discussions regarding the latest innovations in the trade.
