With the deadline for entries extended to August 7th, hear from our jury president, Lawrence Sher, ASC, as he shares his thoughts on this year’s FilmLight Colour Awards, his relationship with colour and how he likes to work with colourists.
FilmLight has finalised the 2023 FilmLight Colour Awards jury, made up of high-profile creatives from across the world, and appointed renowned cinematographer, Lawrence Sher, ASC, as this year’s president. Due to popular demand, the awards deadline has also been extended, with submissions now closing to the global colourist community at 23:59 BST on 7 August 2023.
The FilmLight Colour Awards are currently open for entries, closing on 31 July 2023. They are free to enter and open to colourists across the globe, working on any grading platform. There are five categories: theatrical feature; television series/episodic; commercial; music video; and the Spotlight award, for colourists working under the constraints of lower budget projects.
Since the dawn of colour cinema, there has always been a demand for a skilled and sympathetic person to guide colour throughout a production. But, even today, while the director and cinematographer may be household names, the work of the colourist is often not recognised. In 2021, to correct this neglect of a vital talent in the overall creative team, the FilmLight Colour Awards were born.
Directed by five-time Academy Award winner, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the 2023 Oscar-nominated movie, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, tells the story of an acclaimed journalist-turned-documentarian, Silverio, as he goes on a journey to reconcile with the past, the present and his Mexican identity.
Now that Madame Claude has been broadcast, I thought it would be interesting to have a look at the postproduction process of this film’s image and at the tools used during it. I reawakened a few memories during discussions with Gilles Granier and Arnaud Caréo, respectively the colorist and technical director at Labo Paris (associate member of the AFC).

Seven films selected for the 26th edition of Fespaco were restored by the Eclair teams. The festival took place from 23 February to 2 March 2019 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Two Movies, post-produced in EclairColor, available in theatres on February 2019.
Four theatrical releases in January and February of EclairColor post-produced feature lengths, including one photographed by an AFC member. In the Heritage news, four films being restored, including one photographed by an AFC member.
In the latest news from Eclair, an EclairColor film in the theatres, photographed by a member of the AFC, and eight films currently restored, of which one was photographed by an AFC member.
Advertising VFX companies MPC and Mikros have today announced that they will integrate their operations in Paris. The two world-class advertising brands will join forces to provide a single source of creative VFX and production services to the French advertising market.
Following this summer’s corporate restructuring, Eclair continues to provide audio-visual post production services to professionals of the film and television industries. All post production activities are now centralized at our Vanves location.
During our first meeting with Jean-Pierre Améris, I understood that this film would have a very distinctive graphic universe because of its story and historical setting and because of the visual references from films and paintings that were given to me (Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, by Tim Burton, Dracula, by Francis F. Coppola, etc.).
