On November 21 at Camerimage, the AFC will be hosting a seminar on the challenges of look development in digital cinema. Moderated by David Ungaro, AFC, this conference will be an opportunity for Olivier Patron, DIT, and Martin Roux, AFC, to present Diachromie and Diaphanie, two plug-ins they have developed with cinematographer Paul Morin, and to explore the transformation of a raw image into a rich, sensitive and striking composition.

Seminar’s introduction by Martin Roux, AFC
The three of us have spent many hours over the last few years building tools that enable us to develop our images robustly and reliably, allowing operators and post-producers to easily create singular renderings for any project. These tools have changed our practices and have begun to be used by some of our colleagues, much to our delight.
We’ll be presenting Diachromie and Diaphanie, for the first time at a public cameremage event. This will provide an opportunity for a brief theoretical update on digital image development, followed by a practical part with the design of a look for a feature-length fiction film.

This case study will be based on La Morsure, directed by Robin Saint-Blanquat, a fantasy film set in the 60s (about which I had the opportunity to write an article here). This film, which blends period realism with a dreamlike atmosphere, is a perfect example of the potential and necessity of dedicated look development tools.
Unlike approaches based on fixed LUTs, Diachromie and Diaphanie, such as FilmLight’s Chromogen, enable advanced and continuous customization, favoring great precision in colorimetric and textural transformations. By intervening directly on the colorimetric volume, these tools can subtly adjust image rendering independently of camera choice and broadcast space.

With this conference, the AFC invites you to explore the new possibilities offered by colormanaged workflows and discover advanced image development techniques for digital cinema. Between technical demonstration and artistic reflection, this session aims to enrich our understanding of the crucial role of look development in the making of a film, offering filmmakers new tools to explore, refine and shape their vision.
Come and dive into the heart of visual creation with us.

Thanks to the AFC for entrusting us with this conference, and to Jean Marie Dreujou, Marc Salomon, Clement Thurninger, Laurent Andrieux and David Ungaro for their support.
