Présidé par le réalisateur et scénariste Quentin Dupieux, le jury du 14^e Nikon Film Festival, dont la directrice de la photographie Élodie Tahtane, AFC, était l’une des dix membres, a décerné, samedi 27 avril 2024 au Grand Rex, quatorze prix parmi une sélection de 50 films finalistes. Avec comme thème imposé "Le feu", le Grand prix du jury a été attribué au film Le Plein, de Charlie Moreno, photographié par Teva Vetea, et, entre autres prix, celui de la Photographie au Foyer, de Laura Volcy, mis en images par Laurent Ganiage, Thibault Alcouffe, Tahah Al Aissi, Paul Gronen.

An adaptation of Vanessa Schneider’s story Tu t’appelais Maria Schneider, Jessica Palud’s second feature film, Maria depicts the destructive beginnings of actress Maria Schneider’s career. Through the reconstruction of a scene which caused a scandal in Bernardo Bertollucci’s 1972 film Last Tango in Paris, the director condemns domination and the abuse of power in the film industry, a subject that has become highly relevant and necessary. The cinematography, by Sébastien Buchmann, AFC, is a subtle reminder of the seventies, and revisits the film sets of that era. He reflects on this particularly captivating experience as a cinematographer. Maria is presented in the Official Selection, Cannes Première, at the Cannes 2024 Festival. (BB)

Here’s a full list of On Film winners at Cannes 2024 ! It was a great showing for film. Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best First Film (Camera d’or) along with four winners in Critics’ Week and the winner of the inaugural Audience Award in Directors’ Fortnight.

For his first feature-length fiction film, director Jonathan Millet proposes a truer-than-life plunge into the contemporary hunt for a Syrian war criminal. A film about spies in spite of themselves, but above all a gallery of characters with looks damaged by exile and the atrocities of war. Belgian cinematographer Olivier Boonjing, SBC (already interviewed three years ago with Rien à foutre, by Emmanuel Marre and Julie Lecoustre, also at Critics’ Week) is behind the camera to direct this thriller set between Strasbourg and the Middle East. This film is presented in the opening session and is also a serious contender for the Caméra d’or. (FR)

Julien Colona’s first feature film, Le Royaume, tells the story of a young girl who discovers her father’s true nature, and tries to love him at all costs. The relationship thus forged resembles a journey of initiation along the roads of the Isle of Beauty. A film with Corsicans, shot in Corsica, by a Corsican filmmaker. With cinematographer Antoine Cormier, we immerse ourselves in the making of this two-faceted thriller. Le Royaume is in the Un Certain Regard Official Selection at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. After three years as a camera assistant, Antoine Cormier went on to light short films, music videos and commercials. His passion : shooting on film. When he met Julien Colonna on a commercial, they shared a passion for doing "well with little". (BB)

I’m happy and moved to be filming again with Caroline and Jonathan, ten years after the short film Tant qu’il nous reste des fusils à pompe. I love their work. Eat the Night is fascinating and mesmerizing. The characters are pictured with tenderness, and the actors are directed with taste, talent and accuracy. And humor ! The film is in selection at the Quinzaine des Cinéastes. (RV)

Le n°9 du quotidien cannois du Film français, jeudi 23 mai, dans sa rubrique "Les déjeuners du Film Français à la Plage des Palmes", publiait un court entretien avec le directeur de la photographie indien Santosh Sivan, ISC, ASC, lauréat de l’Hommage Pierre Angénieux 2024. En voici quelques extraits.

Julien Colonna, pour son premier long métrage, Le Royaume, désire retracer l’histoire d’une jeune fille qui découvre la véritable nature de son père et qui va tenter de l’aimer à tout prix. La relation ainsi tissée ressemble à un parcours initiatique sur les routes de l’île de Beauté. Un film avec des Corses, tourné en Corse, par un cinéaste corse. C’est avec le chef opérateur Antoine Cormier que nous allons nous immerger dans la fabrication de ce thriller à double facette. Après avoir enchaîné des tournages comme assistant caméra pendant trois ans, Antoine Cormier éclaire des courts métrages, des clips et des publicités. Sa passion : tourner en argentique. Lorsqu’il rencontre Julien Colonna sur une pub, ils partagent cette passion et le talent de faire "bien avec peu". Le Royaume est en Sélection officielle à Un Certain Regard au 77^e Festival de Cannes. (BB)

After more than 10 years of absence, the filmmaker behind The Godfather and Apocalypse Now returns with an extremely personal project in which he has invested a significant portion of his fortune. This is Megalopolis, a fable aimed at younger generations that reinterprets classical texts from ancient Rome in the context of a futuristic city reminiscent at times of Batman’s Gotham. It is also a family film with many main roles, featuring extensive sets and special effects to immerse the audience in this anticipatory atmosphere. The film is shot by Romanian-born cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr., ASC, a loyal collaborator of the director for nearly 20 years. The film is in Official competition for the 77th Palme d’Or.

In 2018, amidst a new and youthful selection of directors, one of Cannes’ seasoned filmmakers is back after been "persona non grata" at the Festival since 2011 as a result of his statements regarding Hitler during the press conference for Melancholia. Lars von Trier is definitely not a neo-Nazi, but his sin was to have made a particularly ill-advised attempt at Scandinavian humour. The House That Jack Built portrays a serial killer played by Mat Dillon, starring alongside Bruno Ganz and Uma Thurman. This is cinematographer Manuel Alberto Claro’s, DFF, third film in a row with the Copenhagener director. (FR)

Au milieu d’une sélection assez neuve et rajeunie, 2018 marque aussi le retour d’un des grands cinéastes cannois, déclaré persona non grata du Festival depuis 2011 pour ses propos sur Hitler lors de la conférence de presse de Melancholia. Certes, Lars Von Trier n’est pas un authentique néo-nazi mais il semble avoir pêché par une tentative d’humour scandinave très mal négociée. The House That Jack Built offre le portrait d’un tueur en série interprété par Mat Dillon, aux côtés de Bruno Ganz et Uma Thurman. Manuel Alberto Claro, DFF, signe les images de ce troisième film de suite avec le cinéaste de Copenhague. (FR)

Le 19^e Festival de l’image de film Plus Camerimage se tiendra à l’Opera Nova de Bydgoszcz (Pologne) du 26 novembre au 3 décembre 2011 (Voir précédentes infos). Il comprendra huit sections de films en compétition. Le jury de la compétition internationale sera présidé par le directeur de la photographie australo-néo-zélandais Roger Donaldson ; Joel Schumacher présidera quant à lui le jury de la compétition des films polonais, Haskell Wexler, ASC, celui des courts métrages documentaires et Jay Rosenblatt (...)
