Technique

As you know, the AFC has joined Imago, effective on March 12 of this year. I am very proud of having successfully fulfilled the mission that the AFC President, Gilles Porte, and Board of Directors, had assigned to me. In order to complete this mission, last September I put together a group composed of Marie Spencer, Jean-Marie Dreujou and Gilles Porte. This group later grew to include about ten members [1]. Their advice was extremely valuable.

After their first film, Syngué Sabour, in 2012, Atiq Rahimi called on Thierry Arbogast a second time to film the adaptation of the eponymous novel by Scholastique Mukasonga. This story, somewhere between a Bildungsroman and a bloody tragedy, takes place in Rwanda in the 1970s against a background of sundrenched hills, rainy dawns, and dreamy forests, and is set in a Catholic boarding school far outside of the city whose pupils are upper-class young ladies.

Interview with cinematographer Ants Tammik about Anna Hints’s "Smoke Sauna Sisterhood" "Blood, sweat and tears", by François Reumont
Les entretiens de Camerimage 2023
Smoke Sauna Sisterhood is a surprising film. Winner of several prizes at international festivals such as Sundance, filmmaker Anna Hints’ invitation to share the intimate confessions of Estonian women is a real success. Set in an extremely simple decor -traditional saunas heated by wood fires-, the documentary is a dance between of words, bodies, steam and light. Cinematographer Ants Tammik spent twenty days with the women of his country, in the heart of this magical place, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The humidity levels were close to 100%, with a temperature fluctuating between 60 and 80°. Welcome to the Smoke Sauna ! (FR)

Simon Beaufils speaks about image and the directing of "Anatomy of a Fall", de Justine Triet "Sun, snow, and a criminal court", by François Reumont
Les entretiens au Festival de Cannes 2023
Justine Triet’s (Sybil, Victoria) new film is multidimensional, layer after layer being progressively peeled away as the film progresses. Starting as a family drama involving a Franco-German couple and their visually impaired son, the film evolves around a series of characters, in the context of a high-profile criminal trial. Simon Beaufils created the images for this closed doors thriller, with 2.5 hours divided between a high mountain chalet and a courtroom. Anatomy of a Fall (Anatomie d’une chute) was awarded the 76th Palme d’or. (FR)
(FR)
