(FR)

"Zoom zoom jazz", by François Reumont, for the AFC

The winner of the 2023 Pierre Angénieux Tribute is a filmmaker who loves movement. He teamed up with Loach on several major films (Raining Stones, Ladybird, My Name is Joe, amongst others) until their The Wind That Shakes the Barley won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2006.
He then altered dircetion and worked with Paul Greengrass (United 93, Captain Philips) and filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow, whose films The Hurt Locker and Detroit he shot. Barry Ackroyd, BSC, reminisces with us about his exceptional career and discusses how he creates cinema. (FR)

Death of Bill Butler, ASC (1921-2023)
By Marc Salomon

Histoire de la cinématographie

Bill Butler, who passed away two days before his 102nd birthday, was of the same generation as his colleagues William Fraker or Haskell Wexler and was hardly older than Conrad Hall. He was born Wilmer C. Butler on 7 April 1921 in Colorado. He began cinematography later in life (he was already 47 years old when he shot The Rain People, by Francis Ford Coppola in 1968), but Bill Butler left his mark on several films that remain hallmarks of a certain American cinema of the 1970s : The Conversation, Jaws, Grease, Rocky II (and III and IV). But he was careful not to allow himself to get locked into a specific genre or style, and he veered into commercial productions, which were better able to anonymize his talent.

To Jimmy Glasberg
By Philippe Ros, AFC

Jimmy Glasberg

Writing about Jimmy Glasberg could take the form of a book given the extent to which he experimented and searched. More modestly, I limited myself to films that seemed to mark two distinct steps in his career : the short films on Sam & Dave and Otis Redding, and the feature film Le Lien de parenté which I shot alongside him as a cameraman.

Michał Dymek, PSC, speaks about the shooting of "EO", by Jerzy Skolimowski
"Cinema and chance", by François Reumont

Les entretiens de Camerimage

A tribute to Robert Bresson’s Au hasard Balthazar, EO, by Jerzy Skolimowski, took everyone by surprise on the first day of competition at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. At the end of the Fortnight, he won a deserved award from the jury and gave a hilarious speech in which the 84-year-old director thanked his equine actors. To mark the occasion of the screening of this film at Camerimage this year, the film’s cinematographer, Michał Dymek, aged 32, sat down with us to discuss this extraordinary collaboration situated between a road movie, a visual poem and an animal fable.
