Shooting at more than 1,000 frames per second (shutter at 180 degres) is a headache for the light, especially when filming flying insects and other butterflies: it is impossible to use powerful HMI sources without burning the insects and no Led source is powerful enough. We have tested with Eli Lévé, at Next Shot rental company, Dedolight Lightstream projectors and this technique has solved the difficulties.

Eli uses the Phantom 2K with special macro optics that allow to close at 64 or even 128. This closure is essential to maximize the depth of field and thus be able to film flying insects without focusing. The amount of light required is therefore enormous, but the subjects are small: the use of parallel light is particularly suitable.

The DPB70 allows to move the source several meters away from the camera in order not to produce any heat. The width of the beam is perfect to use different reflectors of 50 or even 25 cm and thus produce several axes of light with the same source.

The same tests have been carried out with the HMI 400W and the parallel beam lens (DPBA 14-19) with excellent results: ideal for documentaries where the ridiculous weight, the small footprint and the tight price will be appreciated by the operators.... and the Production directors!

Lightstream is the solution for complex high-speed shooting.
