Diego García

The Rotterdam International Film Festival, in association with the NSC (Netherlands Society of Cinematographers) celebrates the memory of great cinematographer Robby Müller every year by awarding the prize that bears his name to an up-and-coming filmmaker. In past years, recipients of the award have included Diego Garcia (a Mexican cinematographer who worked with Darius Khondji, AFC, ASC, on the series “Too Old to Die Young” in 2020, and Hélène Louvart, AFC, in 2023. This year, it is the turn of Belgian cinematographer Grimm Vandekerckhove to be recognized. We discuss this award with him, and particularly his work with Belgian director Bas Devos for whom he has shot two films (Ghost Tropic in 2019 and Here in 2023). (FR)

Le Festival international du film de Rotterdam, en association avec la NSC (Association néerlandaise des directeurs de la photographie), célèbre chaque année la mémoire du grand directeur de la photo Robby Müller en décernant le prix qui porte son nom à un cinéaste en devenir. Après Diego Garcia (directeur de la photo mexicain ayant notamment signé avec Darius Khondji, AFC, ASC, la série "Too Old to Die Young"), en 2020, ou Hélène Louvart, AFC, en 2023, c’est au tour cette année du directeur de la photo belge Grimm Vandekerckhove d’être honoré. Créé conjointement par le Festival international du film de Rotterdam (IFFR), l’Association néerlandaise des directeurs de la photographie (NSC) et Andrea Müller-Schirmer, la veuve de Robby Müller, le premier "Robby Müller Award" a été remis au directeur de la photographie mexicain Diego García.

Held up by the night shooting of Thom Yorke’s new music video, Darius Khondji, AFC, ASC, was only able to make a quick round-trip to Cannes this year. Too late, in any case, to be able to attend the screening at the Grand Théâtre Lumière of a part of the series "Too Old To Die Young", which he and Diego Garcia shot for Nicolas Winding Refn. He was, however, able to find some time to speak with us, by phone, about this shoot in Los Angeles… (FR)

Retenu par le tournage nocturne du nouveau clip de Thom Yorke, Darius Khondji, AFC, ASC, n’a pu faire qu’un rapide aller-retour sur la Croisette pour voir des films. Trop tard, en tout cas, pour assister à la projection au Grand Théâtre Lumière d’une partie de la série "Too Old To Die Young", qu’il a photographiée, avec Diego Garcia, pour Nicolas Winding Refn. Il a quand même trouvé le temps de nous parler, au téléphone, de ce tournage à Los Angeles... (FR)

Actuellement en tournage (en alternance avec Darius Khondji, AFC, ASC) de la série Amazon "Too Old to die young", dirigée par Nicolas Winding Refn, le directeur de la photo Diego Garcia est une nouvelle étoile montante de la cinématographie en provenance du Mexique. Il est à l’affiche cannoise cette année avec le premier film du comédien Paul Dano, présenté en ouverture de la Semaine de la Critique. Cette histoire de famille, qui se passe dans l’Amérique rurale des années 1960, est incarnée à l’écran par Jake Gyllenhaal, Carrey Mulligan et le jeune Ed Oxenbould. (FR)
