The Annual General Assembly of Imago (IAGA) – the International Federation of Cinematographers – was held in London from 14-15 February 2024, hosted by the BSC. Richard Andry, who represented the AFC alongside Jean-Marie Dreujou, Eric Guichard (Imago’s Controller) and Denis Lenoir (Board member), has written the following detailed and illustrated recap of this event.

In late June 2023, during the Euro Cine Expo in Munich (cinema equipment trade show), Claire & Rob Sanders, the managers, gave six slots to the Imago Technical Committee (ITC) to exhibit their work. Among these presentations, ITC proposed a panel entitled “Artistic decisions in cinematography - To be burned or not to be burned ?”

Fin juin 2023, lors de l’Euro Cine Expo à Munich (salon de matériel cinéma), Claire & Rob Sanders, les responsables, ont donné six créneaux au Comité technique d’Imago (ITC) pour exposer ses travaux. Parmi ces présentations, l’ITC a lancé un panel nommé en anglais : “Artistic decisions in cinematography – To be burned or not to be burned ?”

La FNF (Association norvégienne des directeurs de la photographie) organise, conjointement avec Imago (Fédération internationale des associations de directeurs de la photographie), l’association danoise DFF et l’association suédoise FSF, l’"Oslo Digital Cinema Conference" 2023 du 16 au 18 juin. Une trentaine de sujets seront abordés, un accent étant mis sur les "Production virtuelle/Volume LED".

The "Photon Path" directly linked to the glossary has become a very helpful tool to communicate among committee members and has triggered the creation of an educational application. The Imago Technical Committee is happy to share this work in progress diagram for comment and contributions from the community. Arri, FilmLight, RED, and Sony have contributed to this scheme and the definitions linked to it. The ITC is in the process of obtaining approval from other manufacturers.

Le "Photon Path", directement lié au glossaire, est devenu un outil très utile pour la communication entre les membres du comité et a déclenché la création d’une application éducative. Le Comité Technique d’Imago (ITC) travaille actuellement avec les étudiants de l’Université des sciences appliquées des médias de Stuttgart pour concevoir cette application. L’ITC est heureux de partager ce diagramme en cours d’élaboration pour recueillir les commentaires et les contributions de la communauté. Arri, FilmLight, RED et Sony ont participé à l’élaboration de ce schéma et aux définitions qui y sont liées.

Lors d’une assemblée générale extraordinaire qui s’est tenue en visioconférence samedi 4 septembre 2021, Imago (Fédération internationale des associations de directeurs de la photographie) a procédé à l’élection de sa présidence et au renouvellement de son "Board" (conseil d’administration). Elen Lotman, ESC, et Ron Johanson, ACS, ont été élus coprésidente et coprésident d’Imago.

The IMAGO Technical Committee invites you to view Alfonso Parra ADFC’s tests of the Sony FX9 Camera. Alfonso is renowned for conducting an honest testing regimen that showcases a camera’s capabilities, demonstrates its strengths, and shows how far he can push the limits of a camera. The Sony FX9 camera tests presented by Alfonso and his colleagues demonstrate the balance of technical and creative artistic performance in the Sony FX9.

Le comité technique d’Imago vous invite à lire le compte-rendu des tests d’Alfonso Parra, ADFC, de la caméra Sony FX9. Alfonso est réputé pour avoir mené un programme de test honnête qui met en valeur les capacités d’une caméra, démontre ses forces et montre à quel point il peut repousser les limites d’une caméra. Les tests de la caméra Sony FX9 présentés par Alfonso et ses collègues démontrent l’équilibre entre les performances artistiques techniques et créatives de la Sony FX9.

À la suite des récentes tribulations qu’a vécues Imago – la fédération internationale des associations de directeurs de la photographie –, les présidents de cinq d’entre elles (AEC, AFC, AIC, BSC, NSC) ont appelé, dans une lettre adressée, le 8 février dernier, à son conseil d’administration, aux présidents de chaque association et à leurs membres DoP en général, à revenir aux fondamentaux et à envisager l’avenir avec sérénité.

C’est un des derniers géants de la cinématographie qui vient de disparaitre, le 7 février 2021, à l’âge de 97 ans. Magicien des lumières, maître de l’artifice, coloriste baroque et raffiné, Giuseppe Rotunno appartenait à cette génération des grands artisans longtemps formés au sein du système des studios, rompus à toutes les techniques et capables d’interpréter avec la même maestria des univers très différents. Tout au long de sa carrière, Rotunno aura ainsi perpétué une certaine conception de l’image qui se garde de tout naturalisme, préférant affirmer avec talent, mais aussi une grande liberté, le caractère "fabriqué" de toute œuvre cinématographique.

The Imago Technical Committee and Sony are pleased to announce that after several meetings at IBC exhibitions, one of the requests from the cinematographers, DITs and colorists community gathered by the Imago Technical Committee (ITC) in its latest survey has been fulfilled by Sony’s Japanese engineers.

La "British Academy of Film and Television Arts" (BAFTA) et la "British Society of Cinematographers" (BSC) ont récemment – 18 février 2024 pour l’une, 3 février pour l’autre – décerné leur Prix de la Meilleure Photographie. Oppenheimer, de Christopher Nolan, photographié par Hoyte van Hoytema, ASC, FSF, NSC, remporte le BAFTA de la Photographie et Robbie Ryan, BSC, ISC, est le lauréat du 68^e Prix BSC de la Meilleure Photographie de long métrage pour Poor Things (Pauvres créatures), de Yorgos Lanthimos.

We learnt of the death of John Bailey, ASC, just as the 31st annual Toruń Camerimage festival was about to begin. The most European of American cinematographers died on 10th November, in Los Angeles, at the age of 81. Two weeks later, on 27th November, Victor J. Kemper, ASC, one of the architects of the revival of American cinema in the 1970s, passed away at the age of 96. Let’s take a look back at two parallel careers that embody two different sensibilities in American cinema.

The Rotterdam International Film Festival, in association with the NSC (Netherlands Society of Cinematographers) celebrates the memory of great cinematographer Robby Müller every year by awarding the prize that bears his name to an up-and-coming filmmaker. In past years, recipients of the award have included Diego Garcia (a Mexican cinematographer who worked with Darius Khondji, AFC, ASC, on the series “Too Old to Die Young” in 2020, and Hélène Louvart, AFC, in 2023. This year, it is the turn of Belgian cinematographer Grimm Vandekerckhove to be recognized. We discuss this award with him, and particularly his work with Belgian director Bas Devos for whom he has shot two films (Ghost Tropic in 2019 and Here in 2023). (FR)

Introducing the cinematographers nominated in one of the four sections of the AFC Awards. As a reminder, the winners will be announced at the award ceremony on 8 February 2024 (during the AFC Micro Salon).

The French Society of Cinematographers is proud to announce the nominees of the first Prix AFC’s edition. Tabulation of the nominees was overseen by a lawyer, Maître Bouvet, 354 rue Saint-Honoré, 75001 Paris, on December 15th, 2023. The winners will be announced at the MICRO SALON AFC (Parc Floral de Paris) on February 7th, 2024. Thanks to all the cinematographers for their participation !

Lors de la 36^e cérémonie de remise des "European Film Awards", samedi 9 décembre 2023 à Berlin (Allemagne), le film Anatomie d’une chute, de Justine Triet, photographié par Simon Beaufils, s’est vu attribuer six récompenses : "European Film", "European Director" (Justine Triet), "European Actress" (Sandra Hüller), "European Screenwriter" (Justine Triet, Arthur Harari), "European Editing" (Laurent Sénéchal), "European University Film Award". Le directeur de la photographie danois Rasmus Videbæk, quant à lui, s’est vu remettre l’"European Cinematography" pour Bastarden (The Promised Land), de Nikolaj Arcel.

Luciano Tovoli, AIC, spearheaded the creation of Imago, the European Federation of Cinematographers Societies, in 1992. Its original constituent societies were four European cinematographers’ societies : AIC (Italy), AFC (France), BSC (Great Britain), BVK (Germany). In 2023, it was renamed the International Federation and now has 54 member societies. The thirtieth anniversary celebration took place simultaneously with Imago’s Annual General Assembly (IAGA) in Rome, Imago’s birthplace. I was invited to represent the AFC at this event.

Imago, European Federation of Cinematographers Societies (Fédération européenne des associations de direct(eurs)trices de la photographie), fut créée en 1992, à l’initiative de Luciano Tovoli, AIC, par quatre associations européennes de directeurs de la photographie : AIC (Italie), AFC (France), BSC (Grande-Bretagne), BVK (Allemagne). En 2023, devenue Fédération internationale, Imago regroupe 54 associations. Fêter dignement ce trentième anniversaire était couplé à la tenue d’une Assemblée Générale Annuelle d’Imago (IAGA) à Rome, lieu de naissance de la belle trentenaire. C’est à cet évènement que j’ai été invité pour y représenter l’AFC.

The AFC is pleased to announce its return to IMAGO – the ex-European and now International Federation of Cinematographers. The AFC’s return was unanimously acclaimed (except for one abstention) at Imago’s Annual General Assembly (IAGA), held on Wednesday, 12 March 2020 at Brussels. The AFC was represented by Gilles Porte, its President, and Eric Gautier, who is in charge of international affairs.

Organized by the Norwegian cinematographers of the FNF and the European Federation “Imago” in partnership with the Norwegian Film Institute and Nordisk Film & TV Fond, the 7th Oslo Digital Cinema Conference was held from 18-20 October 2019.

The IMAGO (European Federation of Cinematographers) Annual General Assembly (IAGA), organized with talent by our colleagues of the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC), was held from the 13th to the 15th of February 2009 at the British National Media Museum in Bradford, a charming UNESCO world heritage “cinematographic” town of West Yorshire, England.
AFC was represented by President Remy Chevrin, Robert Alazraki IMAGO Board Member and Richard Andry.
After an introducing welcome from IMAGO President Nigel Walters, BSC, the Assembly discussed numerous points (25 in the agenda) of more or less importance.
