Du 17 octobre 2023 au 21 janvier 2024, la Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) présente une exposition qui rassemble des chefs-d’œuvre en noir et blanc issus de ses collections photographiques. L’exposition met l’accent sur les photographes qui ont concentré et systématisé leur création artistique en noir et blanc tels que Nadar, Man Ray, Ansel Adams, Willy Ronis, Helmut Newton, Diane Arbus, Mario Giacomelli, Robert Frank, William Klein, Daido Moriyama ou Valérie Belin…

Performance, art film, testimony of an artist in his autumn years - Man in Black is a new film by Chinese director Wang Bing, known for his documentary work, such as Youth, in Official Competition. Wang Xiling, a Chinese artist in exile and composer aged 87, bears witness to what he has seen and experienced as an artist. Naked, showing the scars of torture and abuse, he wanders through the spaces of the Bouffes du Nord, the legendary and beautiful Parisian theatre. He plays fragments of his works, sings… and above all recounts, in sparing unemotional prose, the experience of an artist under the Chinese regime. An intensely personal and moving film, with an image as powerful as the force of his narrative.

A la fois performance, film d’art et témoignage d’un artiste à l’automne de sa vie, Man in Black est la nouvelle production du réalisateur chinois Wang Bing, surtout connu pour son travail en documentaire (Argent Amer, Mrs Fang ou Les Ames mortes). Un film d’une heure où Wang Xiling (son compatriote artiste en exil et compositeur de 87 ans) vient tour à tour mimer, déambuler, chanter et jouer du piano tout nu en racontant ses souvenirs sur la scène du théâtre des Bouffes du Nord. Une expérience visuelle et sonore qui se veut avant tout un témoignage d’une vie d’artiste face à la dictature qui contrôle son pays depuis 1950. Caroline Champetier a collaboré avec le cinéaste pour fabriquer ce film étrange dans lequel musique et images se mêlent intimement. (FR)

Cinematographer Jimmy Glasberg, AFC, passed on 13 January 2023, aged 83. He was the direct descendant of the pioneering "camera men" who weren’t yet called "directors of photography". Jimmy Glasberg, in both his thinking and his work, constantly questioned what it means to film and what he called "the filial passage from a still image to a moving image." He left behind a filmography that is rich in both its diversity and its ideological commitments.

Extending rather than recreating the cult film by Nicholas Roeg, The Man who Fell to Earth – in which David Bowie plays an alien on Earth looking for a way to save his own planet – the eponymous TV series is a readaptation of the original novel that introduces a good dose of modernity. The impeccable British actor of Nigerian origin Chiwetel Ejiofor (Dirty Pretty Things, 12 Years a Slave...) lends his features to the visitor from another galaxy, while Noémie Harris (the mother in the film Moonlight) plays the Earthling who will be forced to accompany him on his mission. The screenplay by Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet of course seizes the opportunity to show the social reality of present-day America, like an echo of the science-fiction short story that centers the theme of the foreigner.
Tommy Maddox-Upshaw ASC is the mind behind the images. He discusses with us the challenges involved in filming this series, a Spanish-British coproduction, which has been broadcast since April 2022 on Showtime. (FR)

Prolongeant plus que ne reconstituant le film culte de Nicholas Roeg (The Man Who Fell To Earth, 1976) – où David Bowie incarne un extra-terrestre à la recherche sur Terre d’un moyen de sauver sa propre planète – la série TV éponyme réadapte le roman d’origine en y injectant une bonne dose de modernité. C’est l’impeccable comédien britannique d’origine nigérienne Chiwetel Ejiofor (Dirty Pretty Things, Twelve Years a Slave...) qui prête désormais ses traits au visiteur d’une autre galaxie, tandis que Noémie Harris (la mère dans le film Moonlight) y interprète la terrienne qui va être forcée de l’accompagner dans sa mission. Le scénario signé Alex Kurtzman et Jenny Lumet saisit bien sûr l’opportunité de montrer la réalité sociale de l’Amérique actuelle, comme en écho à cette nouvelle de science fiction où le thème de l’étranger est au centre du propos.

Selected in the “Director’s debut” competition, The Quiet Girl, by Colm Bairéad, is a drama set in rural Ireland in the 1980s, which depicts the life of a young girl whose troubled parents send her to spend the summer with a couple of cousins. This film plays a lot on the unspoken and on a false appearance of distance to better reveal the many secrets at the heart of the story. This very touching portrait of early adolescence is played by the young Catherine Clinch, who radiates talent on screen. It is also the second Gaelic-language film for the Irish director of photography Kate McCullough ; the first was the very beautiful Arracht, by Tom Sullivan (at Camerimage in 2020). Note that Kate also has a special link with Poland, since she attended the Łódź film school... (FR)

Sélectionné dans la compétition "Premiers films", The Quiet Girl, de Colm Bairéad, est un drame dans l’Irlande rurale des années 1980, qui met en scène la vie d’une jeune fille dont les parents en difficulté l’envoient passer l’été chez un couple de cousins. Un film qui joue beaucoup sur les non dits et sur une fausse apparence de distance pour mieux révéler au cœur du récit beaucoup de secrets. Ce portrait très touchant du début de l’adolescence est interprété par la jeune Catherine Clinch qui irradie de talent sur l’écran. C’est aussi le deuxième film en gaélique pour la DoP irlandaise Kate Mc Cullough après le très beau Arracht, de Tom Sullivan (à Camerimage 2020). Notons que Kate a également un lien particulier avec la Pologne, puisqu’elle a fait ses études à l’école de cinéma de Łódź... (FR)

Set almost exclusively in a dilapidated and dark apartment, Lorenzo Bianchini’s L’angelo dei muri (The Angel in the Wall) is a strange story mixing present and past, featuring a lonely old man threatened with eviction and new tenants. The result is particularly evocative of, both in its form and its staging, The others, by Alejandro Amenabar (2001). Austrian cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger was behind the camera on this film with few shots a very decisive choreography between actors and camera. A staging of space above all. (FR)

L’ombre dans les arts visuels, un thème que deux institutions madrilènes explorent chez les maîtres anciens au musée Thyssen-Bornemisza, et chez les artistes contemporains à la Caja Madrid jusqu’au 17 mai.
