Nous avons reçu, il y a quelques jours, ces mots aimables que Kees Van Oostrum, président de l’ASC, adressait aux membres de l’AFC. « J’allais vous écrire la semaine dernière quand j’ai appris que le grand Raoul Coutard venait de disparaître, mais je décidais alors que j’écrirais mon prochain éditorial de président pour le magazine de l’ASC sur lui et ma relation personnelle avec lui. Je n’ai jamais eu le privilège de le rencontrer mais il a eu une grande influence sur moi en tant que directeur de la photographie. L’article sera de toute façon inclus dans le prochain numéro mais je tenais déjà à vous le faire partager. »

Few days ago, we received from Kees Van Oostrum, President of the ASC, these kind words addressed to all the members of the AFC. “I was going to write you last week when I got the news that the great Raoul Coutard had passed away but then decided that I was going to write my upcoming Presidents desk article for the ASC magazine about him and my personal connection. I never had the privilege of meeting him but he was of great influence to me as a cinematographer. Anyway included is the article that will go out in the next issue but wanted to share it with you already.”

Raoul Coutard has passed away ! The famous cinematographer and director left this world on Tuesday, 8 November 2016, near Bayonne, at the age of 92. With his passing, a major figure of the cinematography world of the last sixty years – from 1956 with Pierre Schoendoerffer’s La Passe du Diable to 2001 (Philippe Garrel’s Sauvage Innocence) – has taken his last bow.

Cinematographers Richard Andry, Jean-Jacques Bouhon, Céline Bozon, Jean-Noël Ferragut, Pierre-William Glenn, Pierre Lhomme, Baptiste Magnien, Gilles Porte, and Jean-François Robin, all AFC members, share what the memory of Raoul Coutard and his personality brings to their minds.

When certain people die, those who you sadly never met but meant so much to you, in fact meant the world to you, perhaps really long ago when they were young and very much alive and kicking, It’s so easy to let things go, to not openly react or respond, but to leave it to others, perhaps read an obituary, or just offer up a ’too bad’ or ’how sad’ and now let’s move on, what’s next ? But the news last week of Raoul Coutard’s death has affected me deeply and I wish to say something because for me he was a god, a master like no other... and since this is Camerimage, the cinematography festival, something needs to be said here.

When, last year, I arrived at Camerimage, I was carrying with me the painful trauma of the attacks perpetrated two days earlier in the streets of Paris. This year, I came with the sadness of just having lost Raoul Coutard, a teacher and a friend. But I was welcomed with an equivalent dose of warmth by our foreign counterparts and especially by Ed Lachman, ASC, and Dick Pope, BSC, both of whom are colleagues and friends.

Quand, l’an dernier, je suis arrivé à Camerimage, je portais le douloureux traumatisme des attentats perpétrés deux jours avant dans les rues de Paris. Cette année, c’est avec la tristesse d’avoir perdu, en la personne de Raoul Coutard, un Maître et un ami, que j’ai été accueilli avec la même chaleur par nos pairs étrangers et en particulier par Ed Lachman, ASC, et Dick Pope, BSC, collègues et amis.

Raoul Coutard s’en est allé ! Le célèbre directeur de la photographie et réalisateur s’est éteint, mardi 8 novembre 2016, près de Bayonne, à l’âge de quatre-vingt-douze ans. Avec sa disparition, c’est l’acteur majeur d’un large champ de la photographie de cinéma des soixante dernières années – qu’il a couvert entre 1956 (La Passe du diable, de Pierre Schoendoerffer) et 2001 (Sauvage innocence, de Philippe Garrel) – qui tire une dernière fois sa révérence.
