Todd Hayne’s new opus, produced by Amazon Studios, is a screen adaptation of a 2011 Brian Selznick novel. The writer and illustrator specialized in children’s books also authored the screenplay of Martin Scorcese’s Hugo Cabret. This film tells two parallel tales, one set in 1920 and the other in 1970, and was photographed by Edward Lachman, ASC. The New York cinematographer was offered a trip to Cannes by his producers and confides to us in this filmed interview his thoughts about the film’s image, his love for 35mm film, and shares some observations regarding the future of cinematographic narration…

Produit par Amazon Studios, le nouvel opus de Todd Haynes porte a l’écran un roman de Brian Selznick de 2011. Cet écrivain et illustrateur spécialisé dans les livres pour la jeunesse est aussi l’auteur du scénario de Hugo Cabret, de Martin Scorcese. Pour ce film-ci, une double narration à cheval entre les années 1920 et 1970 a été photographiée par Edward Lachman, ASC. Le 35 mm pourrait devenir une victime collatérale de la classification des caméras pour l’Ultra HD (UHD) TV, selon les nouvelles recommandations issues du Partenariat pour la Production Numérique britannique (Digital Production Partnership - DPP) sur les formats d’acquisition pour la production "broadcast", selon Adrian Pennington pour British Cinematographer. Le Festival Camerimage a pris fin avec la cérémonie de clôture qui s’est déroulée, samedi 21 décembre 2015, au Grand Théâtre de l’Opera Nova de Bydgoszcz (Pologne) et la proclamation du palmarès. Présidé par le réalisateur Michael Hoffman, le jury a décerné la Grenouille d’or au film de Todd Haynes, Carol, photographié par Ed Lachman, ASC, la Grenouille d’argent à Rams, de Grímur Hákonarson, photographié par Sturla Brandth Grøvlen, DFF, et la Grenouille de bronze au Fils de Saul, de László Nemes, photographié par Mátyás Erdély, HSC.

The Camerimage Festival ended with the closing ceremony that took place on Saturday, 21 December 2015 at the Grand Theatre of the Opera Nova of Bydgoszcz (Poland) and the announcement of the winners. The jury, presided by director Michael Hoffman, awarded the Golden Frog to Todd Haynes’ film Carol, cinematography by Ed Lachman, ASC; the Silver Frog to Grímur Hákonarson’s film Rams, cinematography by Sturla Brandth Grøvlen, DFF; and the Bronze Frog to Lázló Nemes’ film Son of Saul, cinematography by Mátyás Erdély, HSC.

After Roger Deakins, Ed Lachman is without a doubt the second most legendary cinematographer in competition at Cannes. The director of photography and director, a native of New Jersey, will be joining his friend Todd Haynes in offering us a film that stands somewhat apart from the rest of those that make up the cinematic landscape of 2015. A film shot in Super 16, recreating the New York of the 1940s, and reuniting Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. We took this opportunity to have him share his love of film with us.

Un film réaliste et poétique

Avec Roger Deakins, Ed Lachman est sans doute la deuxième légende de l’image de film en compétition cannoise. Le chef opérateur et réalisateur natif du New Jersey viendra nous proposer avec son ami Todd Haynes un film un peu à part dans le paysage cinématographique de 2015.
Un film tourné en super 16, recréant le New York des années 40, réunissant Cate Blanchett et Rooney Mara. Une occasion pour lui de nous faire partager son amour de la pellicule. (FR)

AFC films in festivals

La 68ème édition du Festival de Venise se tiendra du 31 août au 10 septembre prochains. Présidé par Darren Aronofsky, le jury sera composé de l’artiste et réalisatrice finlandaise Eija-Liisa Ahtila, du musicien américain David Byrne, du réalisateur italien Mario Martone, du réalisateur américain Todd Haynes, de l’actrice italienne Alba Rohrwacher et du réalisateur français André Téchiné.
