Tom Stern, ASC, at the AFC
by Remy ChevrinIt was during an evening in Cannes that I had the pleasure and the honor to meet Tom Stern : he was the president of the jury for the Vulcan prize for Technical Artist awarded by the CST, and I was able to spend a few hours talking with him about the business and the responsibilities it engenders.
I was touched by his words : they showed a warmth that I found not only in his outstanding work with Clint Eastwood but also in his work as a gaffer during the 1980s alongside some of the greatest American DPs.
Anyone who has had the pleasure of working with Tom will recognize his exceptional approach to the photographic reality of a film, without ostentation, always full of meaning, offering a kind of realism, but shifted and magnified. His photography is continually renewed and nurtured by the history of “photographies", an influence of the great masters of still photography. His work thus touches both light and darkness, sometimes moving into the darkest blacks to discover the truth of Million Dollar Baby…
We also spoke of his special attachment to France, and his youthful memories of the southern region still dear to his heart. When he spoke of the AFC, it was obvious that his insight and sensitivity should become a part of what we share within our association ...
So, I wish Tom Stern a warm welcome to the AFC.
