Brian Livingstone

Doubly honored in 2023 (at the Manaki Brothers Festival and soon at Camerimage), British cinematographer Peter Biziou, BSC, shares with us some memories from his long and prestigious career on commercial and fiction sets. Although Mississippi Burning (Oscar for Best Cinematography in 1989) was undoubtedly his highest distinction, his name has appeared in the credits of films such as Monty Python’s The Life of Brian, Richard Loncraine’s Richard III, or Peter Weir’s The Truman Show. Doublement honoré en cette années 2023 (au Festival Manaki Brothers et bientôt à Camerimage), le directeur de la photographie britannique Peter Biziou, BSC, est venu partager quelques souvenirs de sa longue et prestigieuse carrière menée de front entre les plateaux de publicités et ceux de la fiction. Si Mississippi Burning (Oscar de la Meilleure photographie en 1989) reste sans doute la plus haute distinction pour lui, il est aussi au générique de très grands films comme La Vie de Brian, des Monty Python, Richard III, de Richard Loncraine, ou encore The Truman Show, de Peter Weir... Loin d’avoir lui-même les "Snake Eyes", le récipiendaire du Lifetime Achievement Award Stephen H. Burum, ASC, a collaboré avec plusieurs grands cinéastes américains : Francis Ford Coppola (Outsiders et Rusty James en 1983), Danny DeVito (La Guerre des Rose en 1989 et Hoffa en 1992) et bien sûr Brian de Palma sur huit de ses films, parmi lesquels Les Incorruptibles (1987) et Snake Eyes (1998) qui faisaient partie de la rétrospective consacrée au chef opérateur à Camerimage 2022. Après les projections de Rusty James et Les Incorruptibles, Stephen H. Burum est revenu avec pragmatisme et humilité sur son travail avec ces différents réalisateurs, sa vision du métier et, peut-être, le secret de son savoir-faire. (CC)

In a filmed interview (in French), Manu Dacosse, SBC, tells us about the making of The Double Lover, his first project with François Ozon. A psychoanalytical thriller reminiscent of the films of both David Cronenberg and Brian de Palma.

Todd Hayne’s new opus, produced by Amazon Studios, is a screen adaptation of a 2011 Brian Selznick novel. The writer and illustrator specialized in children’s books also authored the screenplay of Martin Scorcese’s Hugo Cabret. This film tells two parallel tales, one set in 1920 and the other in 1970, and was photographed by Edward Lachman, ASC. The New York cinematographer was offered a trip to Cannes by his producers and confides to us in this filmed interview his thoughts about the film’s image, his love for 35mm film, and shares some observations regarding the future of cinematographic narration…

Produit par Amazon Studios, le nouvel opus de Todd Haynes porte a l’écran un roman de Brian Selznick de 2011.
