AFC Statement

Three percent of films lensed by female cinematographers selected at Camerimage

Contre-Champ AFC n°361

[ English ] [ français ]

Since 1993, the date of the first Camerimage, only 3% of films lensed by female cinematographers have been selected. Years go by, but nothing changes. Despite repeated requests from societies, most recently Women in Cinematography, how is it that this percentage has not increased, and that the selection does not reflect the current presence of women cinematographers, to mention only this minority, in world production.

The AFC supports the Camerimage festival in its desire to celebrate excellence in cinematography, and to this end we believe that diversity is essential and the promise of artistic enrichment.
The much-needed societal change is underway, and it’s also up to us, behind the camera, to encourage it.

The demand for quality, the very essence of Camerimage, will only continue to flourish if the festival’s organizing committee implements a genuine policy of diversity, equity and inclusion in their selection process.
For the AFC, it is a matter of urgency to take full account of the just and repeated demands of our profession and of Women in Cinematography, so that Camerimage continues to represent the best of cinematography in all its diversity.
