Up in the air with VariCam 35 for "6 balloons" on Netflix
Director of Photography Polly Morgan, BSC, used a number of Panasonic’s Varicam 5 cinema cameras to shoot Netflix’s new drama, "6 Balloons".

Morgan was excited about the camera’s ability to shoot at high ISOs, and shot the film in 4K, capturing 12-bit 4:4:4 AVC Intra files to P2 cards. Although she shot at high ISOs for night scenes, Morgan found the noise pattern when dialing down from 5,000 base to 2,500 closely matched the native 800 ISO. “You couldn’t really tell the difference between that and 800 and I was really impressed at how 2,500 saw more than what the eye sees at low light levels”, explained Morgan. “Overall, I’m pleased with how the film came out.”

VariCam LT provides colour contrasts for Kawasaki advert
Netherlands-based video production company Thumbed Productions used a VariCam LT to film an online advert for Kawasaki Motors Europe. The video maker was able to apply its signature style of colourful and high contrast images with the help of VariCam’s unique colour science.

The combination of the RAW camera and the AF100 all in one is ideal for Thumbed Productions, which uses the VariCam LT in 95% of its commercials. “The images look great straight out of camera”, said Henk van den Doel, Director at Thumbed Productions.

VariCam new firmware upgrade
The latest Varicam firmware upgrade adds a range of improvements & features, including the Custom Splash Screen (CSS). Supported by the slogan, ‘Tag my VariCam’ the Custom Splash Screen is a new solution to prevent camera theft. This deterrent measure uses a digital name tag that customizes your splash screen with owner information.
