A Thank You from the SBC (Society of Belgian Cinematographers)

by Willy Stassen, President, and Louis-Philippe Capelle

[ English ] [ français ]

Willy Stassen, President, and members of the Society of Belgian Cinematographers where invited by the AFC, as Imago members, to the 2009 edition of Micro Salon at La fémis Cinema School in Paris last February 6 and 7th.
Willy Stassen and Louis-Philippe Capelle sent thanks to the AFC for this invitation.
  • All of our members – and especially those who responded by being present – would like to thank you for your invitation to the 2009 Micro Salon.
It was a session full of lessons, and full of good cheer. The occasions for such exchanges are rare, except of course, for the Imago meetings.
We would have liked to have been better prepared for our presentation, for example by refining the selection of excerpts of our members’ work, but we lacked the time to find the desired prints and to check the quality of DVD transfers.
Obviously such meetings bring us closer and reinforce our sharing of the same passion. And so it is that, moved by the same fraternal spirit, we hope to be able to return the favor as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Warm regards,
Willy Stassen, SBC, President

  • One hour and twenty minutes on the Thalys train from Brussels to Paris, and you’re there, which is faster than it sometimes takes to go home in Brussels during rush hour.
Belgium has never been so close to our prestigious cinematographic neighbor, as it was on that Saturday, February 7th during the very friendly meeting between the directors of photography of the SBC (Society of Belgian Cinematographers) and our French colleagues.
The magnificent setting of the Femis film school, and the enthusiastic and warm welcome of the AFC touched us.

First we were impressed by the brilliant presentation around the film Oceans (with a little foretaste of Belgian-ness from Luc Drion’s presence), by the quantity of equipment on display, and then our turn on stage a little shyly for a quick presentation. Another Belgian joke no doubt, for after a 35 mm projection of the very beautiful film photographed by Franck Van den Eeden, the trailers dropped off the night before by the French Community and the Flemish Film Fund paled in comparison (to say the least), and we are very sorry for it. It was but a dim reflection of much brighter productions of which we are quite proud. We’ll do better next time. We promise.
After sharing a few drinks among friends, we all scattered around the show, before getting back on the train to Brussels, contented. We must do this again, perhaps with a more structured discussion.
