Eric Guichard, AFC a donné sa Leçon de Cinéma le lundi 24 avril dernier à L’Espace Cinéma Kodak en présence du réalisateur Raoul Peck.

While Paris Images announces its next edition, which will take place entirely online from January 25 to 29, 2021, its website offers an interview with director of photography Eric Gautier, AFC. On the occasion of the Micro Salon AFC 2020, he talks to us about his job and in particular about working with a director facing the language barrier.

Eric Dumont, AFC, a commencé sa carrière sur des documentaires, puis il a éclairé plusieurs films de Stéphane Brizé : La Loi du marché, En guerre, Un autre monde. Il poursuit sa carrière éclectique en signant l’image du dernier film d’Audrey Estrougo, Suprêmes, présenté en Sélection officielle (Séance de Minuit) au 74ème Festival de Cannes. (BB)

Le quotidien Libération, qui consacre habituellement sa dernière page au portrait d’une personnalité digne d’intérêt, trace, dans son édition du mardi 3 novembre, celui de notre confrère le directeur de la photographie Eric Gautier, AFC.
« Eric me fait penser au premier poisson qui a mis l’œil dehors car il avait par hasard des pattes », dit de lui avec humour le réalisateur Alain Resnais, dont Eric a photographié le dernier film, Les Herbes folles. Et Alain Resnais de s’expliquer : « Curieux et ouvert à tout, dépourvu d’a priori, Eric sort perpétuellement la tête pour voir si c’est mieux de vivre dans ou hors de l’eau ».

Comme annoncé il y a peu, le directeur de la photographie Éric Dumont vient d’être admis au sein de notre association. Dans les présentations qui suivent, ses parrains AFC - Vincent Mathias et Julien Poupard, nous font connaître ce nouveau membre actif.

C’est pour une seconde collaboration qu’Eric Gautier retrouve Walter Salles sur les routes Nord américaines. Carnets de voyage était aussi en sélection officielle à Cannes en 2004 où Eric avait été récompensé pour son travail par le prix Vulcain de l’artiste technicien. L’adaptation filmée du roman culte de Jack Kerouac On the Road, en sélection officielle de ce 65ème rendez-vous cannois, a inspiré à Eric une image sans cesse réinventée.

Eric Gautier, AFC, answers a question regarding the potential paradox of filming a movie about a hypothetical apparition by the Virgin Mary with a smile and a recollection about the beginning of his adventure with Xavier Giannoli: “It’s a bit of a challenge to film the mystery of faith. The love of God is like any sort of love: there is no tangible proof, just the gift of oneself. Sincerity (and lies, like in other of Giannoli’s films) is at the heart of the story. The loneliness of the two characters, Jacques (Vincent Landon) and Anna (Galatea Bellugi) is the spark that sets the story in motion.”

Director Jia Zhangke is one of the most critically acclaimed Chinese director and the one best-loved by international audiences. He has already presented a number of films at Cannes (I Wish I Knew, A Touch of Sin, Mountains May Depart). He entrusted Eric Gautier, AFC, with the cinematography of his last feature-length film. Eric Gautier is the cinematographer of France’s greatest directors (Arnaud Desplechin, Olivier Assayas, Alain Resnais, Patrice Chéreau) and also shot Into the Wild, On the Road, and Hotel Woodstock for Ang Lee. He is accompanying Jia Zhang-ke on his walk up the red carpet at Cannes this year, where the film Ash Is Purest White is in official competition. (BB)
