Lucie and I have known each other for nearly fifteen years. We studied together and, having become friends, we have always discussed the films we work on. It is in this spirit that we continue our discussions on Nino, Pauline Loquès’ first feature film, presented in competition at Critics’ Week. (EV)

Que ma volonté soit faite (Her Will Be Done), of polish born director Julia Kowalski, was shot in the Vendée region of France with a predominantly Polish cast. The director revisits the themes of exorcism and dark forces that are still very present in Poland, echoing her previous film, J’ai vu le visage du diable (I Saw the Face of the Devil). For her first feature film, Crache cœur (Raging Rose), she was accompanied by director of photography Simon Beaufils. This collaboration continued on her subsequent films, and he returned to shoot her latest feature film, Her Will Be Done, on film with a small crew. The film was selected for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight. (BB)

In an ultra-realistic narrative style reminiscent of the masters of Belgian cinema and their first Palme d’Or in 1999 (Rosetta, starring the late Émilie Dequenne), Laura Wandel takes the viewer into a single environment, in real time at the heart of a hospital’s paediatric ward. Following the head nurse played by Léa Drucker, we gradually become immersed in the plot and the bonds she forms with a distressed mother and her 4-year-old child. Frédéric Noirhomme, SBC, 1.86 metres tall, was responsible for filming this deep dive into the hospital environment of our Belgian neighbours, who seem just as overwhelmed and suffering as our own... L’Intérêt d’Adam (In Adam’s Interest) will therefore open the 2025 Critics’ Week with a special screening. (FR)

Certainly one of the standout series of Series Mania 2025, "Querer", co-written and directed by Spanish filmmaker Alauda Ruíz de Azúa, gives voice to women facing domestic violence and paints a stark portrait of contemporary Spanish society and family dynamics. Told over four episodes (filmed in 11 weeks), each serving as a chapter in a long and painful struggle for this mother (portrayed brilliantly by actress Nagore Aramburu), the series is also a visual gem, where every frame and especially every camera movement seems meticulously composed and designed to serve the story. A l’occasion d’un double article sur le cinéma indien publié dans ses deux derniers numéros, le British Cinematographer Magazine s’est intéressé, entre autres, aux techniciens occidentaux qui participent à ces tournages souvent épiques qui ont fait la réputation de Bollywood. Parmi ceux-ci, Jean-Marc Selva, AFC, qui partage avec nous ses expériences et son ressenti sur ce cinéma du bout du monde.

J’avoue avoir hésité à poster cette dernière semaine parce qu’elle débute par un retour en France et que ma démarche s’intitule "Two Pictures a Day in Thailand"... 
Peut-être aussi parce que j’ai toujours préféré les points de suspension aux points finaux...

J’ai atterri le 3 mars en France et nous avons repris le tournage de Fils de personne, à Paris le vendredi 14 mars pour terminer le 21 mars.
Plutôt que de mettre en avant deux photos qui correspondent à chaque jour de cette période, je choisis quelques images en vrac, d’une manière toujours totalement subjective.
Une fois n’est pas coutume, je commence par la fin.

Teaming up with Michel Franco for the sixth time, Yves Cape, AFC, has brought Dreams to life, featuring Jessica Chastain, who previously starred in their last film, Memory. A dark study of passion between a powerful American woman and a charming young Mexican immigrant, the film mainly addresses the everyday racism in the United States. Dreams also gives star dancer Isaac Hernández the opportunity to play a tailor-made role, portraying a character navigating between passion and disappointment. The film is in the Official Competition at the 2025 Berlinale.

Les ouvrages consacrés aux grands directeurs de la photographie qui ont marqué l’histoire du cinéma sont suffisamment rares pour que l’on mentionne celui-ci, paru en 2022, et consacré à Karl Freund, un des maîtres de l’Expressionnisme allemand qui fit ensuite une brillante carrière à Hollywood. Autant dire d’entrée de jeu, qu’à la lecture de cet ouvrage, notre déception est à la hauteur de nos attentes...
