Visite à IBC, la suite...
Par Philippe Ros, AFC

IBC

Rodrigo Prieto, AMC, ASC, talks to us about "Pedro Paramo", which he directed and co-photographed.
By François Reumont for the AFC

Les entretiens de Camerimage 2024

For his first film as director (and co-operator with Nico Aguilar), Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, ASC, AMC adapts for the 3rd time for the screen a so called unadaptable classic of Mexican literature. An evocation of Mexico during the revolutionary period which takes place over several eras with the dual recreation of a village and its ruins after its abandonment.
A strange 130 min Netflix experience which deals with surrealism, dreams and the nostalgia of an era. As in Toruń to present his film to cinematographers from around the world, the filmmaker talks to us about it and his transition to directing. (FR)

Manaki Brothers Festival 2024, 45th edition Interview with Claire Pijman, NSC, about "The Gate", by Michael David Beamish and Jasmin Herold
"Warriors of the wasteland", by François Reumont, for the l’AFC

Festival Manaki Brothers 2024

In The Gate, a documentary on the psychological and human toll of war on veterans and soldiers’ families, directors Michael David Beamish and Jasmin Herold paint a particularly bleak portrait of America. Blending a style that at times resembles fiction with classic documentary elements - such as voiceovers and everyday life - The Gate is shot and edited by Dutch cinematographer and director Claire Pijman, NSC. While in Bitola, she discussed this unconventional project, which was filmed in two sessions separated by the pandemic. (FR)

Benjamin Kračun, BSC, talks about his work on "The Substance", by Coralie Fargeat
"Two Palm Trees and a Pink Wall", by François Reumont

Conversations with cinematographers at Cannes 2024

A steroid-enhanced variation on a classic piece of fantastic literature (Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray or Balzac’s La Peau de chagrin), The Substance offers director Coralie Fargeat the opportunity to bring two 1980s superstars back into the limelight—and to pour thousands of blood gallons onto the Grand Théâtre Lumière screen. While homages to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo are instantly recognizable, British cinematographer Benjamin Kračun also cites Roman Polanski’s Repulsion and Paul Verhoeven’s Total Recall, two other major studio films. He further explains how this strange film, which every single shot smells California , was entirely made in France, between Paris and Nice. The Substance is in competition for the 77th Palme d’Or. Conversations with cinematographers at Cannes 2024

A variation on steroids on a classic of fantasy literature (Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray or Balzac’s La Peau de chagrin), The Substance offers director Coralie Fargeat the opportunity to propel two 1980s super stars back to the top of the bill... and spill thousands of liters of blood on the screen of the Grand Théâtre Lumière. While the strong homages to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo are obvious at a glance, British cinematographer Benjamin Kračun, BSC, also cites Roman Polanski’s Repulsion and Paul Verhoeven’s Total Recall, two other great studio films. He also explains how this strange, California-scented film was shot entirely in France, between Paris and Nice... The Substance is in competition for the 77th Palme d’Or. (FR)

Marcel Zyskind, DFF, talks about his work on Viggo Mortensen’s "The Dead Don’t Hurt"
"The Little House in the Canyon", by François Reumont, for the AFC

Conversations with cinematographers at Camerimage

For his second film as a director, actor Viggo Mortensen tells a love story hindered by the Civil War. He stars alongside Vicky Krieps, in an atmosphere that blends classic and modern Western elements. Enhanced by intertwining editing of different time lines, and stunning cinematography by Marcel Zyskind, DFF, the film was shot on locations across Mexico & Canada. It’s presented out of competition during a special screening at Camerimage. (FR)
