Markus Schleinzer, a former casting director who has worked with Michael Haneke, amongst others, has since directed several films. His latest, Rose, is a fairly meticulous historical reconstruction of 17th-century Germany, whose modern black-and-white cinematography is at times reminiscent of Haneke’s The White Ribbon. Based on the true story of a woman from that era who was sentenced to death for pretending to be a man, the film gives Sandra Hüller a role that is both complex and memorable. Gerald Kerkletz, the director of photography, joins us to discuss the challenges of this film, in which the protagonist’s disfigured face plays a central role.
Rose is in the official competition for the 300 Camera award at the 2026 Manaki Festival.
