Avec le décès de Ray Dolby, c’est l’une des figures les plus marquantes et inventives du cinéma qui disparaît. Depuis près de cinq décennies, Dolby Laboratories et lui auront pour ainsi dire révolutionné la façon d’enregistrer et de reproduire le son en général et celui destiné aux salles obscures en particulier. Il nous a quittés jeudi 12 septembre 2013 à San Francisco, à l’âge de 80 ans.

A la suite du décès de Ray Dolby, fondateur de Dolby Laboratories et inventeur hors pair, à qui le son en auditorium et dans les salles de cinéma doit beaucoup, Jean-Paul Loublier, chef opérateur du son et mixeur, témoigne.

“No Man of God” is a behind-closed-doors look into a cell where an FBI agent is interrogating a serial killer. It is an adaptation of authentic recordings made by Bill Hagmaier during his interviews with Ted Bundy. Director Amer Sealey and her DoP Karina Silva implemented directorial and cinematographic strategies to portray these sequences, which are all alike on paper, in order to impart rhythm to the film. “No Man of God” is in competition this year at Torun in the “Cinematographers’ Debuts Competition”. No Man of God est une sorte de huis clos dans une cellule d’interrogation entre un agent du FBI et un tueur en série, adapté des enregistrements authentiques effectués par Bill Hagmaier lors de ses entretiens avec Ted Bundy. La réalisatrice Amber Sealey et sa directrice de la photographie Karina Silva ont dû mettre en place des stratégies de mise en scène et d’image pour traiter ces séquences qui se ressemblent toutes sur le papier et trouver le rythme du film. No Man of God est en compétition cette année à Toruń dans la catégorie "Meilleure première photographie pour un film." (FR)

Darius Khondji, AFC, ASC, is collaborating with Woody Allen for the fifth time on Irrational Man, an official Out of Competition selection at the 68th Cannes Film Festival. _ Having most recently worked on several period pictures—James Gray’s The Immigrant, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris and Magic in the Moonlight, and The Devil You Know, a pilot for a series directed by Gus Van Sant—Darius admits finding great pleasure in returning to a contemporary universe.

Laurent Brunet, who has photographed all of Raphael Nadjari’s films (including Tehilim, selected at Cannes in 2007), has a lot of experience filming abroad. But he didn’t know Africa, which he discovered while collaborating for the first time with Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, the only African to compete at Cannes 2010, with his fourth feature film, A Screaming Man. The original title was A Screaming Man is not a Dancing Bear a quote from The Notebook, Returning Home by the poet Aimé Césaire.

During our first meeting with Jean-Pierre Améris, I understood that this film would have a very distinctive graphic universe because of its story and historical setting and because of the visual references from films and paintings that were given to me (Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, by Tim Burton, Dracula, by Francis F. Coppola, etc.).

Consciously very different than the traditional American hero saga, Damien Chazelle’s biopic First Man is intended to be intimate and sober and depicts the difficulties of a couple in the aftermath of the loss of their first child. Cinematographer Linus Sandgren, FSF, used a variety of different cinematographic techniques for each particular take on this film where he is again working with its young director, both of whom were Oscar winners for La La Land. Here, he discusses with us the slightly-less glamorous, but just as important, aspects of the making of this film. (FR)

Du 17 octobre 2023 au 21 janvier 2024, la Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) présente une exposition qui rassemble des chefs-d’œuvre en noir et blanc issus de ses collections photographiques. L’exposition met l’accent sur les photographes qui ont concentré et systématisé leur création artistique en noir et blanc tels que Nadar, Man Ray, Ansel Adams, Willy Ronis, Helmut Newton, Diane Arbus, Mario Giacomelli, Robert Frank, William Klein, Daido Moriyama ou Valérie Belin…
