La 74^e édition de la Berlinale se tenait du 15 au 25 février 2024 et trois films photographiés par des membres AFC étaient en compétition pour l’Ours d’or. Petit aperçu de cette dernière édition.

Après plusieurs documentaires sur le génocide cambodgien, le cinéaste Rithy Panh a décidé de se lancer dans une fiction recréant l’histoire authentique des journalistes ayant décroché l’unique interview du leader Khmers Rouges en 1978... Une œuvre ambitieuse qui mêle à la fois des scènes portées par un casting prestigieux, plans de coupe provenant d’images d’archives et longs travelings sur maquettes enfantines qui peuvent faire penser au style de Michel Gondry. Le résultat est un film étrange où la naïveté se mêle à la reconstitution historique et où les personnages semblent parfois sur une autre planète. C’est Aymerick Pilarski, AFC, qui s’est chargé de filmer cette œuvre à part présentée dans la sélection officielle Cannes Première. (FR)

After several documentaries on the Cambodian genocide, filmmaker Rithy Panh decided to venture into fiction, recreating the true story of journalists who got the only interview with the Khmer Rouge leader in 1978. This ambitious work combines scenes led by a prestigious cast, cutaway shots from archival footage, and long tracking shots of childlike models reminiscent of Michel Gondry’s style. The result is a strange film where naivety blends with historical reconstruction and characters sometimes happened to be on another planet. Aymerick Pilarski, AFC, lensed this show presented in the official Cannes Première selection. (FR)

With Black Tea, the Franco-Mauritanian filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako (awarded a César in 2015 for his film Timbuktu) tells a story that is both romantic and dreamlike, exploring the encounter between African and East Asian cultures. The main character is a young woman who refused to say “I do” to her future husband at the last minute. She leaves straight for China to live a very different life than the one promised to her in Abidjan. Aymerick Pilarski, AFC, is the cinematographer who crafted the images for this filmic tale that spans Africa and Taiwan, and he was able to offer the director a significant asset in his knowledge of Mandarin, the language in which the film is almost entirely performed. The film is in the running for the Golden Bear. (FR)

Avec Black Tea, le cinéaste franco-mauritanien Abderrahmane Sissako ("césarisé" en 2015 pour son film Timbuktu) propose un récit à la fois romantique et onirique qui fait se rencontrer la culture africaine et celle de l’Extrême-Orient. Avec, comme personnage principal, une jeune femme ayant refusé à la dernière minute de dire oui à son futur mari, pour partir soudain en Chine, vivre une vie très différente de celle qui lui était promise à Abidjan. C’est Aymerick Pilarski, AFC, qui signe les images de ce conte filmé entre l’Afrique et Taïwan, faisant profiter le réalisateur de sa connaissance du mandarin, un atout de taille quand la quasi intégralité du film est interprétée dans cette langue. Le film est en lice pour remporter l’Ours d’or. (FR)

Aymerick Pilarski has had an unusual career. Because he was passionate about the cinema and he wanted to discover other cultures, he decided to study in Beijing rather than in France. This young cinematographer decided to leave for Asia nearly 15 years ago, where he learned Chinese and has been following in the footsteps of Christopher Doyle, a legend in cinematography. (FR)

The cinematography world is in mourning as a result of the death of Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer originally from Ukraine, which occurred on Thursday 21 October 2021, at the age of 42, on the set of Joel Souza’s western film Rust, in New Mexico (USA). A rising star with a promising talent and a warm personality, her work had been noticed on Pollyanna McIntosh’s Darlin’ (2019), Michael Nell’s Blindfire and Adam Egypt Mortimer’s Archenemy (2020). The AFC’s cinematographers send their condolences to her family and loved ones. May her memory live on !
