Xenia, de Panos Koutras. Une rencontre avec Panos l’hiver dernier, un projet de film coproduit par la France, la Grèce et la Belgique. J’avais pu voir son précédent film Strella, et ce film avait été pour moi une forme de révélation, autant pour l’image, que pour ses partis pris et sa liberté d’expression. Le scénario de Xenia était totalement construit, précis, et Panos est un réalisateur qui cherche, travaille et finit par trouver ce qu’il aime.

After winning the Camera d’or in 2017 for her first film Jeune femme, Léonor Séraille returns to the Croisette in Official Competition with Un petit frère. The story spans twenty years, we first accompany the mother, Rose, a young Ivorian woman who arrives in Paris with her two children in 1989. Thanks to ellipses, the director then guides us to one of the sons, Jean, then to the youngest, Ernest. Three eras, three points of view. Director of photography Hélène Louvart , AFC, discusses about her collaborative work with Léonor. After a diversion through England to shoot Firebrand, which was selected for the official competition last year on the Croisette, Karim Aïnouz returns to his homeland to direct Motel Destino, a colourful erotic thriller shot very close to his hometown of Fortaleza, Brazil. It marks the third collaboration between the director and cinematographer Hélène Louvart, AFC, aiming to (re)create the visual universe of an unusual place and to convey the human relationships that take place there, filled with humour and tension. For the second year running, Karim Aïnouz’s work has been selected for the Official Competition, at the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. (BB)

Après un détour par l’Angleterre pour tourner Firebrand / Le Jeu de la Reine, en sélection officielle l’an dernier sur la Croisette, Karim Aïnouz revient dans son pays pour y réaliser Motel Destino, un thriller érotique haut en couleur tourné tout près de sa ville natale, Fortaleza, au Brésil. C’est pour une troisième collaboration que la cheffe opératrice Hélène Louvart, AFC, s’engage au côté du réalisateur brésilien pour (re)créer l’univers visuel d’un lieu insolite et rendre sensible les relations humaines qui s’y passent, faite d’humour et de tensions. Pour la deuxième année consécutive, Karim Aïnouz est sélectionné en Compétition officielle pour cette 77^e édition du Festival de Cannes. (BB)

Nous avions déjà tourné avec Alice Rohrwacher Corpo celeste au sud de l’Italie il y a trois ans. En Super 16 mm, un film essentiellement tourné tout à l’épaule. Le film avait rencontré un grand succès – une sélection à la Quinzaine des réalisateurs, puis l’équivalent du César du meilleur premier film en Italie, ainsi que de nombreux prix dans différents festivals, et le prix du meilleur film européen, ce qui est déjà pas mal pour une premier film…

Une exposition présentant les œuvres d’Hélène Delprat se tient actuellement à La maison rouge, "I Dit It My Way". La société Softlights, membre associé de l’AFC, a réalisé un très grand caisson lumineux qui rétroéclaire l’une des œuvres de l’artiste, Tapisserie d’enfant.

Hélène Louvart, AFC, signed off on the image of La Vie invisible, a Brazilian film presented at Un Certain Regard 2019. A story of two sisters that takes place from the 1950s to the present time. She tells us about her working relationship with Karim Ainouz, the director, and about their shared ambition to dare to create striking visual universes, and about how they learned to modulate that ambition so as to avoid being above the story and the characters, visually speaking. Cinematographer Hélène Louvart, AFC, has filmed over fifty feature-length films during her career, and has worked with many French and foreign directors. She filmed two of the foreign feature-length films at Cannes this year : Jaime Rosales’ Petra, selected in the Directors’ Fortnight, and Alice Rohrwacher’s Lazzaro felice. This is the third time that Hélène Louvart has worked with the Italian director. In 2014, The Wonders won the Grand Prix at Cannes. The director is back this year on the Croisette with Lazzaro felice, in Official Competition. (BB)
