Adapté du fait divers terroriste d’août 2015 au cours duquel trois jeunes touristes américains ont pu éviter un carnage à bord du Thalys, Le 15:17 pour Paris est un étrange mélange au grand écran entre fiction et réalité. Interprété par les trois héros en personne, ce film passe du drame adapté au cinéma pour sa première partie (l’enfance des trois garçons) à une sorte de docu fiction où chaque élément semble sorti de la réalité jusqu’à l’intégration d’images d’archives pour l’épilogue élyséen. Tom Stern, ASC, AFC, fidèle directeur de la photographie du cinéaste californien, explique les enjeux photographiques de ce film pas comme les autres. (FR)

An adaptation of the real-life event of August 2015 in which three young American tourists prevented carnage on board a Thalys train, The 15:17 to Paris is a strange cinematographic mix of fiction and reality. The movie stars the three heroes themselves, and the film transitions from an adaptation of a drama (about the three boys’ childhoods) to a sort of documentary-fiction style in which each element seems to have been drawn straight from reality, down to the integration of archival footage for the epilogue in the Elysée Palace. Tom Stern, AFC, ASC, the Californian director’s loyal cinematographer, explains the cinematographic issues facing this extra-ordinary film. (FR)

Je suis très honoré de parrainer Tom Stern à l’AFC. Je l’ai rencontré il y a deux ans à Camerimage. J’avais été impressionné par son travail sur Mystic River et Million Dollar Baby. J’y retrouvais ce que je trouvais d’absolument remarquable chez Haskell Wexler, Vilmos Zsigmond ou Conrad Hall. Une distorsion d’une image que l’on pourrait qualifier de réaliste.

Having worked for over 20 years as a gaffer to the greatest American cinematographers of the 1970s (Bruce Surtees, Owen Roiszman, Haskell Wexler, Conrad Hall…), then 46-year-old Tom Stern started a new career as a cinematographer on Clint Eastwood’s Blood Work. His faithful collaborator since 1981 Honkytonk Man, he has photographed all of the star’s films since 2002 and subsequently won several international awards.
Four years after Mystic River, Tom Stern returns to Cannes as foreman of the CST jury.

Why this attachment to France for a DP who is à la mode because of his work on the films of Clint Eastwood ? He started as a gaffer for 18 years with Clint… and DPs Bruce Surtees, Owen Roizman and Jack Green.

Pour la cinquième année consécutive, la CST décerne le prix Vulcain de l’Artiste Technicien honorant un collaborateur artistique ayant œuvré sur l’un des films sélectionnés à Cannes.
Présidé par le directeur de la photographie américain Tom Stern, le jury est composé de Monique Koudrine, vice-présidente de la Ficam, Alain Coiffier, président de Panavision Alga Techno, Didier Diaz, président du groupe Transpalux, Pierre Lavoix, conseiller technique, et Yoan de Montgrand, étudiant à La fémis, tous les cinq membres de la CST.

Nous sommes heureux d’accueillir Tom dans cette migration vers l’AFC.

Le thème de cette Master Class était " Que fait un directeur de la photo ? " Nous avons distingué trois rôles différents : chef d’équipe, technicien et artiste, et nous avons invité le public à poser des questions autour des différentes étapes d’un film : l’embauche, la préparation, le tournage et la postproduction.
