Two Pictures a Day in Peru - 6
Sixth Week : September 3-September 11, 2024

Two Pictures a Day in Perú

Gilles Porte, AFC, is currently filming Lady Nazca in Peru, a film directed by Damien Dorsaz. As in 2014 on 3000 Nights, by Mai Nasri, and 2015 on Dans les forêts de Sibérie, by Safy Nebbou, Gilles once again offers us two images per day, taken by him (unless otherwise stated) along with his commentary. A sort of diary of things seen or felt, moments captured on the camera or smartphone.
Here is the diary of the sixth and final week.

Interview with Jacques Delacoux, CEO of Transvideo
By Jean-Noël Ferragut, AFC and Vincent Jeannot, AFC

Entretiens avec les partenaires "industries techniques" de l’AFC

An encounter with Jacques Delacoux, one of the AFC’s associate members who has remained as genuine and likeable as the first day his company, Transvideo, became an associate member of our association. An indefatigable globetrotter, he attends international trade fairs, workshops, festivals, and master classes all over the world. He opened the doors of his company in Verneuil-sur-Avre to us, in order to tell us about the company’s beginnings, the equipment it manufactures, his perspective on his profession, his encounters, his choices, and to sum it up, just what cinema means to him.

Interview with Cinematographer Tom Stern, AFC, ASC, about his work on Clint Eastwood’s film “The 15:17 to Paris”
At 186 mph

Revue de presse

An adaptation of the real-life event of August 2015 in which three young American tourists prevented carnage on board a Thalys train, The 15:17 to Paris is a strange cinematographic mix of fiction and reality. The movie stars the three heroes themselves, and the film transitions from an adaptation of a drama (about the three boys’ childhoods) to a sort of documentary-fiction style in which each element seems to have been drawn straight from reality, down to the integration of archival footage for the epilogue in the Elysée Palace. Tom Stern, AFC, ASC, the Californian director’s loyal cinematographer, explains the cinematographic issues facing this extra-ordinary film. (FR)

Interview with cinematographer Thierry Arbogast, AFC, about his work on Atiq Rahimi’s “Our Lady of the Nile”
Followed by an account by Karine Feuillard, DIT

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

After their first film, Syngué Sabour, in 2012, Atiq Rahimi called on Thierry Arbogast a second time to film the adaptation of the eponymous novel by Scholastique Mukasonga. This story, somewhere between a Bildungsroman and a bloody tragedy, takes place in Rwanda in the 1970s against a background of sundrenched hills, rainy dawns, and dreamy forests, and is set in a Catholic boarding school far outside of the city whose pupils are upper-class young ladies.

Interview with cinematographer Yves Cape, AFC, SBC, about his work on Bertrand Bonello’s film "Zombi Child"

Les entretiens au Festival de Cannes

In his latest film Bertrand Bonello juggles genres and eras between ethnological documentary, historical recreation and fiction. On the one side it depicts female teenage life at a boarding school and on the other a history of Voodoo practices and slavery in Haïti. Claire Mathon, AFC, a Boat in the Sky
By Ariane Damain Vergallo, for Leitz Cine

Optiques

In March 2023, a strike is in full swing in France, disrupting transport and complicating journeys. Claire Mathon, who lives in Paris, must travel every day to the Bry-sur-Marne studios in the distant suburbs, where she is shooting Pablo Agüero’s film Saint-Ex. She has therefore asked the production company – and this will be her only luxury – for a driver to get her there. During this hour-long journey, she sees the sun rise and, for the first time in her life, enjoys the traffic jams that allow her to delay a little the moment when, every day for 47 days, she will enter the famous 1,000m2 studio B5, from which she will not leave until nightfall.

Fredrik Wenzel, FSF, discusses the making of “Triangle of Sadness”, by Ruben Östlund
Carl and Yaya are in a boat...

Les entretiens au Festival de Cannes

After The Square (Palme d’or 2017) and Snow Therapy (Un Certain Regard 2014), Swedish director Ruben Östlund makes his return to the Croisette with a hilarious bombshell where certain scenes rise to the height of Monty Python’s Himalayas. Triangle of Sadness thrilled audiences during the first weekend of the festival, sparking hilarious laughter in the theater as buckets of vomit spilled onto the screen. Cinematographer Fredrik Wenzel, FSF, teamed up with the Gothenburg director again on this marathon shoot of nearly eighty-five days (interrupted at the very start of the pandemic in March 2020, then resumed in the fall). He tells us of his joy at having been able to film this new film, which is a serious contender for this year’s top prize.

(FR)

Sophia Olsson discusses her work on "When the Light Breaks", by Rúnar Rúnarsson
"The girl and death" by François Reumont

Les entretiens au Festival de Cannes 2024

Opening Un Certain Regard competition, Icelandic director Rúnar Rúnarsson’s new film is about grief and lies. The young Icelandic actress and singer Elin Hall plays an ambiguous character, torn between the pain of losing her man and the impossibility of revealing him to others... Swedish cinematographer Sophia Olsson shot the film, which is almost entirely shot in Iceland’s capital, and whose iconic locations will undoubtedly evoke memories for lovers of this timeless city. The Light is Mine
Video interview with cinematographer Jarin Blaschke about his work on Robert Eggers’s film "The Lighthouse", conducted by François Reumont for the AFC

Les entretiens de Camerimage

After their first success with a film whose meticulous recreation of a 17th-century community caused a sensation (The Witch, 2015), the duo composed of Robert Egger (director) and Jarin Blaschke (cinematographer) has taken on another, even more concentrated historical fantasy project. Namely, the meeting between two men (Robert Pattinson and Wilhelm Dafoe) alone on an island where they are the caretakers of a lighthouse in the early 19th century. The film was shot in Nova Scotia and has very dense visuals evocative both of silent film and period fantastic engravings. The film was presented in the Directors’ Debuts competition at Camerimage 2019.

Pierre Lhomme, from Sidney Bechet to the "Light of God"

Pierre Lhomme

Pierre Lhomme’s career has traversed nearly fifty years of French cinema, displaying the same ease and rigorousness with directors such as Alain Cavalier, Chris Marker, Jean Eustache, James Ivory, Joris Ivens, René Féret, Jean-Pierre Melville, Jean-Paul Rappeneau, Margurite Duras, Patrice Chéreau, Robert Bresson, Bruno Nuytten, and others. These richly-diverse collaborations were all nourished by an attentive and uninterrupted observation of natural lighting in all of its forms : “I train my eye everywhere, in the street, in the cinema. I am very curious about gazes, ambiences, climates. Reality is a prodigious source of inspiration.” (P.L.)

"Light Fantastic - The Making of ’The Revenant’"
