In between two Hollywood films, cinematographer Tom Stern, ASC, AFC, found the time to accept the invitation of Pierre-William Glenn, AFC, co-director of the Image department of La fémis film school, to direct a 3-day seminar at the school from 4-6 September 2017.

Entre deux tournages hollywoodiens, le directeur de la photographie Tom Stern, ASC, AFC, a trouvé le temps, les 4, 5 et 6 septembre 2017, de répondre à l’invitation de Pierre-William Glenn, AFC, codirecteur du département Image de La fémis, à venir y diriger un séminaire de trois jours.

Partie visiter le Japon à l’invitation de son éditeur, une grande écrivaine française voit son passé resurgir au pays du Soleil-levant. C’est Isabelle Huppert qui endosse le rôle de ce film signé Élise Girard (Drôles d’oiseaux, Belleville Tokyo). Entre lieux iconiques, paysages de cartes postales et hôtels de luxe, le voyage de Sidonie se transforme peu à peu dans une ambiance fantastique où le fantôme de son mari défunt vient lui tenir compagnie. Céline Bozon, AFC, est aux manettes de l’image et vient nous partager son expérience d’un tournage au pays de Mizoguchi. Un film en sélection à la 80^e Mostra de Venise où il est projeté le mercredi 30 août dans la section parallèle "Journées des Auteurs". (FR)

To celebrate the opening of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Amélie Bonnin’s first feature film, Partir un jour (Leave One Day), was screened on Tuesday 13 May in Cannes and in a number of cinemas across France. For this feature-length adaptation of her 2021 short film of the same name, the director has surrounded herself with the same cast and technical team, including David Cailley, AFC, as cinematographer. Far from the conventions of musicals, the director of photography and the director sought a naturalistic, documentary-style look to accompany this sensitive, funny and moving film about returning to one’s roots, parental heritage and first love. (MC)

Pour accompagner l’ouverture du Festival de Cannes 2025, le premier long métrage d’Amélie Bonnin, Partir un jour, a été projeté mardi 13 mai à Cannes et dans tout un faisceau de salles partout en France. Pour cette adaptation en long métrage de son court métrage du même nom de 2021, la réalisatrice s’est entourée du même casting et de la même équipe technique, dont David Cailley, AFC, à la photographie. Bien loin des codes de la comédie musicale, le chef opérateur et la réalisatrice cherchent ici une image naturaliste, proche du documentaire, pour accompagner ce film sensible, drôle et émouvant, parlant de retour aux sources, d’héritage parental et de premier amour. I am very honored to sponsor Tom Stern to the AFC. I met him two years ago at Camerimage. I was impressed by his work on Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby. I saw in those films what I found absolutely remarkable in the work of Haskell Wexler, Vilmos Zsigmond or Conrad Hall : the distortion of what could be described as a realistic image.

It was during an evening in Cannes that I had the pleasure and the honor to meet Tom Stern : he was the president of the jury for the Vulcan prize for Technical Artist awarded by the CST, and I was able to spend a few hours talking with him about the business and the responsibilities it engenders.

C’est à l’occasion d’une soirée à Cannes que j’ai eu le plaisir et l’honneur de rencontrer Tom Stern : il était alors le président du jury du prix Vulcain de l’Artiste Technicien décerné par la CST et il m’avait consacré quelques heures pour parler de notre métier et des responsabilités qu’il engendrait.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amélie, shot by Bruno Delbonnel, AFC, ASC, has been named the best-shot film of 1998-2008 in a recent online poll conducted by American Cinematographer. "This is real honor for me, especially considering the other movies in this list," said Delbonnel. "These are some of the finest cinematographers, and I’m not sure I deserve to be among them, but I am very happy to be. They are all explorers."
