Pour le nouveau film de Luc Besson, Valérian, il y a eu quatre mois de préparation intense. Luc Besson a d’abord réuni tous les chefs de poste : Hugues Tissandier, le décorateur, Olivier Bériot, le costumier, et Thierry Arbogast, le directeur de la photographie. Il leur a raconté l’histoire de Valérian puis une lecture du scénario a été faite et il leur a montré des dessins afin de les immerger dans le monde particulier de la bande dessinée de Christin et Mezières, parue en France dans les années 1970, dont est tiré le film.

No less than four months of intense preparation preceded the actual production of Luc Besson’s new film, Valerian. Besson first gathered all the department heads : production designer Hugues Tissandier, costume designer Olivier Bériot and cinematographer Thierry Arbogast. He summed up Valerian’s story line then, after a reading of the script, he showed them a series of drawings better to immerse them in the particular world of Christin’s and Mezières’ comic book that appeared in France in the 1970s and which the film is based on.

For his first project filmed inside the Cité du cinéma, Luc Besson decided to make an adaptation of Tonino Benacquista’s novel depicting a reformed New York ‘godfather’ forced to live under a false identity in the Normandy countryside. A mix of comedy and film noir that is largely carried by the presence of a cast that would make even the largest Hollywood studios jealous (Robert De Niro, Tommy Lee Jones, and Michelle Pfeiffer). Here, along with Thierry Arbogst, AFC, who regularly works alongside Besson, we take a look at this film’s approach to visuals and filming in studio. (FR)

After their first film, Syngué Sabour, in 2012, Atiq Rahimi called on Thierry Arbogast a second time to film the adaptation of the eponymous novel by Scholastique Mukasonga. This story, somewhere between a Bildungsroman and a bloody tragedy, takes place in Rwanda in the 1970s against a background of sundrenched hills, rainy dawns, and dreamy forests, and is set in a Catholic boarding school far outside of the city whose pupils are upper-class young ladies.

Sony met the directors of photography Thierry Arbogast, AFC, and Eric Guichard, AFC. In two filmed interviews, they speak about their recent work, shot with the Sony Venice camera.

Thierry Arbogast, AFC is best known for his more than twenty-year-long collaboration with director and producer Luc Besson that began with La Femme Nikita in 1990. But he was also the director of cinematography of The Horseman on the Roof by Jean-Paul Rappeneau, The Crimson Rivers by Mathieu Kassovitz, and Ridicule by Patrice Leconte. In The Patience Stone, he accompanied writer Atiq Rahimi in the screen adaptation of his novel, which was awarded the Goncourt Prize in 2008.

Après Syngué Sabour, en 2012, Atiq Rahimi a fait appel pour la deuxième fois à Thierry Arbogast pour filmer l’adaptation du roman éponyme de Scholastique Mukasonga. Cette histoire, entre roman d’initiation et tragédie sanglante, collines ensoleillées, aubes de pluie et forêt onirique, se déroule dans les années 1970 au Rwanda, au sein d’un institut catholique accueillant des jeunes filles de la bonne société loin de la ville.

Although the special effects and post-production are still being worked on, the first trailers and on-set stories have begun to appear on the Internet from Luc Besson’s adaptation of Christin and Merières cult comic. Thierry Arbogast, AFC, a member of Besson’s innermost circle (and of EuropaCorp, the production company he founded), is, of course, this film’s director of photography. He first worked as a director of photography on a Besson film 20 years ago on The Fifth Element, and is here to discuss with us the particularities of this new “space opera”.

Lucy, le dernier film de Luc Besson, avec Scarlett Johansson et Norman Freeman, qui sera dans les salles le 6 août prochain, a été tourné avec la Sony F65. Thierry Arbogast, AFC, directeur de la photographie sur ce film et sur de nombreux des films de Besson, partage son expérience de tournage avec la F65.

Faisant suite à la récente décision d’un CA de l’AFC confiné d’admettre le directeur de la photographie Vincent Richard "Marquis" au sein de l’association, Thierry Arbogast, Laurent Dailland et Thomas Hardmeier, ses parrains AFC, présentent, dans les textes qui suivent, ce nouvel arrivant en tant que membre actif.

Ayant récemment été admis au sein de l’AFC en tant que membre actif, le directeur de la photographie Aymerick Pilarski est ici présenté par ses deux parrains, Thierry Arbogast, AFC, et Gilles Porte, AFC, qui ont tous les deux soutenu avec justesse sa candidature.

Lors d’une de ses dernières réunions, le CA de l’AFC a décidé d’admettre en tant que membre associé Virtual Production House, société qui propose une suite d’outils matériels et logiciels dédiés à la production virtuelle sur fond d’écrans LED.
