Visite à IBC, la suite...
Par Philippe Ros, AFC

IBC

John Christian Rosenlund, FNF, speaks about the challenges of shooting "The Emigrants", by Erik Poppe
A historical saga in natural light

Les entretiens de Camerimage

In making the decision to produce a new adaptation of the greatest classic of Swedish literature, Norwegian filmmaker Erik Poppe (Utoya : July 22) had his work cut out for him. Because Jan Troell already made a screen adaptation in 1971 starring Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullman, then the two most famous Swedish and international film stars, it’s not an easy thing to make a contemporary remake… However, when you watch the film, you have to admit they’ve done a pretty good job in proposing a modern version of a classic tale in which the currently relevant themes of migration, women’s rights, and religion infuse each scene. John Christian Rosenlund, FNF, was in charge of the lighting on this saga, with an often-minimalistic staging.

Guillaume Deffontaines, AFC, reflects on the making of "Nos Frangins", by Rachid Bouchareb

Les entretiens au Festival de Cannes

For his tenth feature film, Rachid Bouchareb decided to immerse viewers in the student demonstrations of December 1986. At the center of Nos frangins is the free reconstruction of two tragedies : the deaths of the young Malik and Abdel who became the symbols of police brutality during the Pasqua-Pandraud years. Because it alternates between real archival footage, recreated archival footage, and more classic fiction, it was a particular challenge on this film to reproduce the texture of the video used in television reporting at the time. Guillaume Deffontaines, AFC, explains how he did it. Cinematographer Thomas Hardmeier, AFC, discusses his work on Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s film "Big Bug"
The husband, the ex-wife, and the cyborg

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

Jean-Pierre Jeunet directed his new film BigBug for streaming platform Netflix, nearly eight years after his last film, The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet. The latest film is an intimate combination of theater and classic Sci-Fi themes of confrontation between aliens and humans. Almost entirely set inside a futuristic suburban house, the film portrays a group of individuals who find themselves locked inside their automatic home as a result of a giant bug that seems to be affecting the entire planet. For this new film, Thomas Hardmeier, AFC, perfected a shooting strategy based almost entirely on the integration of the lighting into prop sources (with the collaboration of Aline Bonetto, set designer). A shoot that was almost entirely done in studio at Transpaset in Bry-sur-Marne, between September and December. (FR)

Bertrand Tavernier’s Last Voyage

Bertrand Tavernier

With Bertrand Tavernier’s death on 25 March 2021 at the age of 79, the 7th Art lost the last member of its French branch of so-called “classic” filmmakers. A man with an unquenchable curiosity and an encyclopedic knowledge, he had made himself at home within cinema, where he enjoyed both making his films and living the different stages of his life. The camera operators, with whom he enjoyed sharing books and rare, forgotten finds from screens of all sorts – as well as with his other coworkers, friends or acquaintances – were, according to this director, his allies.

Peter Deming, ASC, speaks about the shooting of "The Good Lord Bird", by Albert Hughes
Gunfights, Bible and Daguerreotypes

Les entretiens de Camerimage

Produced and starring actor Ethan Hawke in a state of grace, The Good Lord Bird is a Showtime set just before the Civil War.
Albert Hughes (who directed Menace II Society, with his twin brother Allen) directed the pilot, while Peter Deming, ASC (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive...) shot the seven episodes. He spoke with us about this film shot in Virginia, and which proposes a simultaneously modern and classic vision of a Western.(FR)
