María Secco

Shot on the island of Chiloé, in southern Chile, Brujeria is a fantasy film in which history and politics intertwine in an unexpected and very animalistic way. Set in the late 19th century, at a time when European settlers were arriving alongside the newly formed Chilean state, the script depicts the rebellion of a native teenager when her father is unjustly killed by his German employers. 
This is the second feature film by Christopher Murray, a filmmaker whose academic work in anthropology inspired the subject matter. The cinematography is by María Secco, AMC, who is originally from Uruguay but lives and works in Mexico City. We talk to her about the making of this spellbinding story, which has been selected for the "Contemporary World Cinema" section at Camerimage 2023. (FR)

Tourné sur l’île de Chiloé, au sud du Chili, Brujeria est un film fantastique où l’histoire se mêle au politique dans un mélange inattendu et très animal. Se déroulant à la fin du 19^e siècle, à l’époque où des colons venus d’Europe s’y installent, en même temps que l’Etat Chilien tout juste naissant, le script met en scène la rébellion d’une adolescente native quand son père est injustement victime d’un drame chez ses employeurs allemands.
Un deuxième long métrage réalisé par Christopher Murray, cinéaste dont les travaux universitaires d’anthropologie lui ont inspiré le sujet. Les images sont signées de la directrice de la photographie María Secco, AMC, d’origine uruguayenne mais résidant et travaillant à Mexico. On discute avec elle de la fabrication de cette histoire envoûtante en sélection "Cinéma contemporain mondial" à Camerimage 2023. (FR)

A la fois film labyrinthe et laboratoire scénaristique, Le Roi Soleil, de Vincent Maël Cardona, est un bien étrange objet de cinéma. On y rentre, on y suit parfois de fausses pistes pour mieux revenir en arrière et se laisser emporter dans une sorte de conte en huis clos parfois surréaliste qui invoque à la fois les pièces de Luigi Pirandello ou le cinéma de genre asiatique. C’est Brice Pancot, AFC, qui s’est chargé de filmer cette histoire où une très rigoureuse gestion spatio-temporelle de l’intrigue a dû être mise en place... (FR)

Both a labyrinth movie and a screenwriting laboratory, Vincent Maël Cardona’s Le Roi Soleil is a very strange piece of cinema. We enter, sometimes following false leads, only to return and be swept away into a kind of surreal, one room tale that evokes both Luigi Pirandello’s plays and Asian genre cinema. Brice Pancot, AFC, was responsible for filming this story, which required a very rigorous management of the plot’s space and time...

Que ma volonté soit faite, réalisé par Julia Kowalski, d’origine polonaise, servi par un casting majoritairement polonais, est tourné en Vendée. La réalisatrice revisite les thèmes de l’exorcisme et des forces obscures encore très présents en Pologne et propose une certaine résonance avec son film précédent, J’ai vu le visage du diable. C’est pour son premier long métrage, Crache cœur, que le directeur de la photographie Simon Beaufils l’accompagne pour signer l’image. Cette collaboration se poursuit sur ses films suivants et il revient sur ce tournage en petite équipe et sur pellicule pour ce dernier long métrage, Que ma volonté soit faite, sélectionné à la Quinzaine des Cinéastes de l’édition 2025 du Festival de Cannes. Que ma volonté soit faite (May My Will Be Done), of polish born director Julia Kowalski, was shot in the Vendée region of France with a predominantly Polish cast. The director revisits the themes of exorcism and dark forces that are still very present in Poland, echoing her previous film, J’ai vu le visage du diable (I Saw the Face of the Devil). For her first feature film, Crache cœur (Raging Rose), she was accompanied by director of photography Simon Beaufils. This collaboration continued on her subsequent films, and he returned to shoot her latest feature film, May My Will Be Done, on film with a small crew. The film was selected for the 2025 Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight. (BB)
