Just after the 39-45 war, Mathieu Plainfossé’s architect great-grandfather, inspired by the faith of the pioneers, set about rebuilding the town of Saint Malo, which had been almost destroyed by American bombing raids. It was a mammoth task that lasted more than 15 years, and which he oversaw with talent and perseverance. As for his grandfather, a renowned equestrian veterinarian, he had operated on nothing less than the Queen of England’s racehorses and those of the Aga Khan in his famous Grosbois clinic, using a technique invented by him. Remarkable men of whom he could later be proud.

Sélectionné à la fois dans les compétitions Premier film et Première photographie, The Iron Orchard, de Ty Roberts, raconte le trajet d’un jeune homme parti travailler dans les champs de pétrole du Texas juste avant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Se déroulant sur trois périodes, c’est aussi une histoire d’amour et une étude sociologique de la société américaine de l’époque. Mathieu Plainfossé y signe l’image pour la première fois de sa carrière en long métrage et profite de cette édition 2018 pour nous parler de "Hard Rain". Une autre histoire d’amour mettant en scène la chanteuse suédoise Lykke Li, dont le vidéo-clip est en compétition pour une Grenouille d’or.

Quant à son grand-père, un vétérinaire équestre renommé, il avait opéré, avec une technique inventée par lui, rien moins que les chevaux de course de la reine d’Angleterre et ceux de l’Aga Khan dans sa célèbre clinique de Grosbois. Des hommes remarquables dont, plus tard, il pourrait s’enorgueillir.

Mathieu Almaric shoots his sixth long feature film and comes back on la Croisette, where he won the “Prix de la mise en scène” in 2010 for Tournée. Christophe Beaucarne, AFC, SBC, Almaric’s Director of Photography for all his films, signs a glamorous photography and tries to transcend the image of the mythical singer, played by Jeanne Balibar. Christophe Beaucarne has been working for over twenty years with very different directors on films with very different visual worlds. He has worked with the Larrieu brothers on Un homme, un vrai and Peindre ou faire l’amour, and with Anne Fontaine on Coco Before Chanel and Perfect Mother, with Jaco Van Dormael on Mr. Nobody, and recently with Christophe Gans on Beauty and the Beast. With The Blue Room, the fourth feature film by Mathieu Amalric, competing in the Un Certain Regard section, Christophe Beaucarne is once again working with Amalric, following their collaborations on Stade de Wimbledon and Tournée. Adapted from the eponymous novel by Georges Simenon, Mathieu Amalric plays the lead role alongside Léa Drucker. (BB)
