Shooting at more than 1,000 frames per second (shutter at 180 degres) is a headache for the light, especially when filming flying insects and other butterflies : it is impossible to use powerful HMI sources without burning the insects and no Led source is powerful enough. We have tested with Eli Lévé, at Next Shot rental company, Dedolight Lightstream projectors and this technique has solved the difficulties.

Nous avons testé avec Eli Lévé, chez Next Shot, les projecteurs Dedolight Lightstream et cette technique a permis de résoudre les difficultés.

The 66th Cannes Film Festival has announced its selection

Less than a month before the beginning of the festivities, the Cannes Film Festival has announced the 66th Official Selection through its President, Gilles Jacob, and Thierry Frémaux, Managing Director, at the usual press conference. Before the release of the announcement of the films chosen by the parallel sections, there are already 11 AFC member directors of photography who were responsible for the cinematography of 12 films in the selection.

We learnt of the death of John Bailey, ASC, just as the 31st annual Toruń Camerimage festival was about to begin. The most European of American cinematographers died on 10th November, in Los Angeles, at the age of 81. Two weeks later, on 27th November, Victor J. Kemper, ASC, one of the architects of the revival of American cinema in the 1970s, passed away at the age of 96. Let’s take a look back at two parallel careers that embody two different sensibilities in American cinema.
The 68th Annual Cannes Film Festival Unveils its Selection

The 68th Annual Cannes Film Festival will take place from 13-24 May 2014.
At the usual press conference, Pierre Lescure, President of the Festival, and Thierry Frémaux, its Director General, announced the choice of seventeen feature-length films that will be In Competition for the Palme d’Or, fourteen films selected for “Un Certain Regard”, and thirteen films that will be screened “Hors Compétition”, during the Midnight Screenings and the Special Screenings.
Amongst the films chosen for the Official Selection and parallel selections, seven were filmed by Members of the AFC.

British director and contemporary artist Steve McQueen presents with Occupied City an atypical film ; altogether a tribute, a meditation on memory and archival work. This four hour documentary presented at Cannes draws a parallel between five years of German occupation in Amsterdam (with sound) and contemporary images of the pandemic filmed throughout a three year span. Dutch cinematographer Lennert Hillege, NSC, was in charge of the cinematography, shot on film. (FR)
The AFC at the 65th Cannes Film Festival

As is the case every year, the AFC will be present at the Cannes Film Festival first and foremost by the films that have been chosen for the Official Selection (In Competition and Un certain regard), the Directors’ Fortnight and the Critics’ Week, that were filmed by some of its member directors of photography. Ten “AFC” films will be screened this year in these selections. An eleventh film will also be added with a restored classic to be screened at Cannes Classics (see the detail of the “AFC” films in the Official Selection and in the Parallel Selections).

Todd Hayne’s new opus, produced by Amazon Studios, is a screen adaptation of a 2011 Brian Selznick novel. The writer and illustrator specialized in children’s books also authored the screenplay of Martin Scorcese’s Hugo Cabret. This film tells two parallel tales, one set in 1920 and the other in 1970, and was photographed by Edward Lachman, ASC. The New York cinematographer was offered a trip to Cannes by his producers and confides to us in this filmed interview his thoughts about the film’s image, his love for 35mm film, and shares some observations regarding the future of cinematographic narration…
Cartoni France et la réduction de l’impact carbone des tournages

Pour Cartoni France, la réduction de l’impact carbone de la consommation électrique sur les tournages implique une démarche technique globale. L‘avènement de l’utilisation des lumières LED en remplacement des soft-lights traditionnels a permis de réduire de façon marquée la consommation électrique des productions. Ainsi, la consommation des studios de France TV à Vendargues pour la série "Un si grand soleil" est vingt fois inférieure à celle de son concurrent "Plus belle la vie" !

Cinematographer Xavier Dolléans, AFC, partnership with director David Hourrègue is long-standing, and the two have worked together on several series, such as "Cut" (France Ô) and "Skam" (France TV Slash). The duo has built a certain reputation on the back of the success of these programmes, and they attacked their first big-budget project with the same production crew. This project is a new, six-episode adaptation of Zola’s novel Germinal, shot with a 12-million-Euro budget. This series will be broadcast on public television by France Télévisions and is expected to be one of the public service broadcaster’s main attractions of October 2021. This is also a major event for Xavier, who has been selected in competition at Toruń for Best Television Series Image. (FR)
