Raoul Coutard

Raoul Coutard s’en est allé ! Le célèbre directeur de la photographie et réalisateur s’est éteint, mardi 8 novembre 2016, près de Bayonne, à l’âge de quatre-vingt-douze ans. Avec sa disparition, c’est l’acteur majeur d’un large champ de la photographie de cinéma des soixante dernières années – qu’il a couvert entre 1956 (La Passe du diable, de Pierre Schoendoerffer) et 2001 (Sauvage innocence, de Philippe Garrel) – qui tire une dernière fois sa révérence.

Raoul Coutard has passed away ! The famous cinematographer and director left this world on Tuesday, 8 November 2016, near Bayonne, at the age of 92. With his passing, a major figure of the cinematography world of the last sixty years – from 1956 with Pierre Schoendoerffer’s La Passe du Diable to 2001 (Philippe Garrel’s Sauvage Innocence) – has taken his last bow.

Du 28 mars au 9 avril 2007, la Cinémathèque française organisait une rétrospective consacrée à Raoul Coutard et la journée du 31 mars lui était entièrement dédiée avec une rencontre-débat animée par Alain Bergala, à laquelle se joignirent Éric Gautier, AFC, et Julien Hirsch, AFC.

Dans la suite de cet article, les directeurs de la photographie Richard Andry, Jean-Jacques Bouhon, Céline Bozon, Jean-Noël Ferragut, Pierre-William Glenn, Pierre Lhomme, Baptiste Magnien, Gilles Porte et Jean-François Robin, entre autres membres de l’AFC, font part en quelques mots de ce que rappelle à leur mémoire le souvenir de Raoul Coutard et de sa personnalité.

Raoul Coutard, le grand Raoul Coutard, vient de nous quitter. Le chef opérateur d’A bout de souffle, Lola, Jules et Jim, Pierrot le fou, Tirez sur le pianiste, Alphaville, Z, parmi tant d’autres films, le complice de Godard, Truffaut, Demy, Costa-Gavras et véritable icône de la Nouvelle Vague, est parti rejoindre tous les légendaires héros de la photographie cinématographique, là-haut dans la grande lumière éternelle.

A l’occasion de l’hommage que lui rend la Cinémathèque française, manifestation dont l’AFC est partenaire, une trentaine de films dont Raoul Coutard a assuré la direction de la photographie seront projetés. Le samedi 31 mars, L’expérience-cinéma : la lumière au cinéma. Au programme de cette journée...

Trois ans depuis nos premiers contacts pour proposer un cycle complet sur les opérateurs. Nous avions un concept de programme (s’étalant sur des périodes de trois mois). Un bloc épais…, partant par exemple de Boris Kauffman…, les opérateurs émigrés, Shufftan, leurs élèves jusqu’à 1940…, ensuite leur arrivée aux USA…, leur regard différent, etc.

Raoul Coutard m’a contactée en 2001, peu après ma sortie de l’Ecole Louis-Lumière, afin que je sois sa seconde assistante sur Sauvage innocence, de Philippe Garrel, nous nous étions rencontrés lorsque je rédigeais mon mémoire de fin d’études.

When certain people die, those who you sadly never met but meant so much to you, in fact meant the world to you, perhaps really long ago when they were young and very much alive and kicking, It’s so easy to let things go, to not openly react or respond, but to leave it to others, perhaps read an obituary, or just offer up a ’too bad’ or ’how sad’ and now let’s move on, what’s next ? But the news last week of Raoul Coutard’s death has affected me deeply and I wish to say something because for me he was a god, a master like no other... and since this is Camerimage, the cinematography festival, something needs to be said here.

From October first to November fifth 2008, the French Cinematheque screened a series of films in tribute to the director of photography Pierre Lhomme, AFC. In his presentation, The Way of Light, Serge Toubiana retraces Pierre’s journey :
"After Giuseppe Rotunno and Raoul Coutard, the French Cinematheque honors Pierre Lhomme. As a way of entering into cinema, not through the door of directors, but through that most beautiful of windows : the film’s lighting. The royal road of those "making" film lighting. Pierre Lhomme has been one of the greatest directors of photography of French cinema for the past four decades..."

Quand, l’an dernier, je suis arrivé à Camerimage, je portais le douloureux traumatisme des attentats perpétrés deux jours avant dans les rues de Paris. Cette année, c’est avec la tristesse d’avoir perdu, en la personne de Raoul Coutard, un Maître et un ami, que j’ai été accueilli avec la même chaleur par nos pairs étrangers et en particulier par Ed Lachman, ASC, et Dick Pope, BSC, collègues et amis.

When, last year, I arrived at Camerimage, I was carrying with me the painful trauma of the attacks perpetrated two days earlier in the streets of Paris. This year, I came with the sadness of just having lost Raoul Coutard, a teacher and a friend. But I was welcomed with an equivalent dose of warmth by our foreign counterparts and especially by Ed Lachman, ASC, and Dick Pope, BSC, both of whom are colleagues and friends.
