Visite à IBC, la suite...
Par Philippe Ros, AFC

IBC

Marcel Zyskind, DFF, talks about his work on Viggo Mortensen’s "The Dead Don’t Hurt"
"The Little House in the Canyon", by François Reumont, for the AFC

Les entretiens de Camerimage 2023

For his second film as a director, actor Viggo Mortensen tells a love story hindered by the Civil War. He stars alongside Vicky Krieps, in an atmosphere that blends classic and modern Western elements. Enhanced by intertwining editing of different time lines, and stunning cinematography by Marcel Zyskind, DFF, the film was shot on locations across Mexico & Canada. It’s presented out of competition during a special screening at Camerimage. (FR)

Peter Deming, ASC, speaks about the shooting of "The Good Lord Bird", by Albert Hughes
Gunfights, Bible and Daguerreotypes

Les entretiens de Camerimage

Produced and starring actor Ethan Hawke in a state of grace, The Good Lord Bird is a Showtime set just before the Civil War.
Albert Hughes (who directed Menace II Society, with his twin brother Allen) directed the pilot, while Peter Deming, ASC (Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive...) shot the seven episodes. He spoke with us about this film shot in Virginia, and which proposes a simultaneously modern and classic vision of a Western.(FR)

The AFC at the 65th Cannes Film Festival

festival de Cannes 2012

As is the case every year, the AFC will be present at the Cannes Film Festival first and foremost by the films that have been chosen for the Official Selection (In Competition and Un certain regard), the Directors’ Fortnight and the Critics’ Week, that were filmed by some of its member directors of photography. Ten “AFC” films will be screened this year in these selections. An eleventh film will also be added with a restored classic to be screened at Cannes Classics (see the detail of the “AFC” films in the Official Selection and in the Parallel Selections).

Guillaume Deffontaines, AFC, reflects on the making of "Nos Frangins", by Rachid Bouchareb

Les entretiens au Festival de Cannes

For his tenth feature film, Rachid Bouchareb decided to immerse viewers in the student demonstrations of December 1986. At the center of Nos frangins is the free reconstruction of two tragedies : the deaths of the young Malik and Abdel who became the symbols of police brutality during the Pasqua-Pandraud years. Because it alternates between real archival footage, recreated archival footage, and more classic fiction, it was a particular challenge on this film to reproduce the texture of the video used in television reporting at the time. Guillaume Deffontaines, AFC, explains how he did it. Rodrigo Prieto, AMC, ASC, talks to us about "Pedro Paramo", which he directed and co-photographed.
By François Reumont for the AFC

Les entretiens de Camerimage 2024

For his first film as director (and co-operator with Nico Aguilar), Mexican cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, ASC, AMC adapts for the 3rd time for the screen a so called unadaptable classic of Mexican literature. An evocation of Mexico during the revolutionary period which takes place over several eras with the dual recreation of a village and its ruins after its abandonment.
A strange 130 min Netflix experience which deals with surrealism, dreams and the nostalgia of an era. As in Toruń to present his film to cinematographers from around the world, the filmmaker talks to us about it and his transition to directing. (FR)

The Bartender is at the End of the Tunnel
Cinematographer Kit Fraser discusses his work on Babak Anvari’s film "Wounds"

Les entretiens au Festival de Cannes

As part of the eclectic selection in the Directors’ Fortnight this year, festivalgoers were able to discover a strange American film by Babak Anvari (Américano-iranien director) in which the fantastic cyclically appears in a rather classic plot centred on a love triangle. In the end, the mix isn’t always well-proportioned between the jumpy moments and the relationship falling apart in an apartment – New Orleans style – full of alcohol and giant cockroaches. British cinematographer Kit Frasier signed off on the visuals of this film, which follows the main character’s inexorable downward spiral. This is a Netflix film, and will soon be released on their platform. (FR)

Manaki Brothers Festival 2024, 45th edition Interview with Claire Pijman, NSC, about "The Gate", by Michael David Beamish and Jasmin Herold
"Warriors of the wasteland", by François Reumont, for the l’AFC

Festival Manaki Brothers 2024

In The Gate, a documentary on the psychological and human toll of war on veterans and soldiers’ families, directors Michael David Beamish and Jasmin Herold paint a particularly bleak portrait of America. Blending a style that at times resembles fiction with classic documentary elements - such as voiceovers and everyday life - The Gate is shot and edited by Dutch cinematographer and director Claire Pijman, NSC. While in Bitola, she discussed this unconventional project, which was filmed in two sessions separated by the pandemic. (FR)

Stairway to heaven
Video interview with cinematographer Laura Merians about her work on Paxton Winter’s film “Pacified”, conducted by François Reumont for the AFC

Les entretiens de Camerimage

Teenage girl Tati lives at the very top of a flight of stairs in a favela in Rio de Janeiro with her mother, who is almost young enough to be her older sister. Her father is the former local crime boss and has been in prison since before she was born. But one day, he returns. For her first film, Laura Merians has created an image full of strength and colors at the heart of a classic tale of redemption whose visual narration elegantly takes over from the literary narration of the script. The strong and endearing characters round off this dizzying dive into contemporary Brazil, where violence has become totally normalized and is a part of the daily lives of millions of people.
