À l’occasion de la sortie sur les écrans, le 6 novembre 2024, de The Substance, de Coralie Fargeat, voir ou revoir une vidéo au cours de laquelle le directeur de la photographie Benjamin Kračun, BSC, évoque, en anglais, son travail sur le film, en Compétition officielle au 77^e Festival de Cannes.

Selected in the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival, the fifth film by director Carine Tardieu deals with the theme of family ties, over a two year period following a tragedy. From its first scenes, L’Attachement is characterized by a mother’s loss, yet the film manages to avoid the pathetic thanks to the luminous, innocent performance of the character of Elliot by 6-year-old César Botti. Elin Kirschfink AFC, SBC, was director of photography for this film produced by Fabrice Goldstein and Antoine Rein (KarKaré Productions). (FR)

With Planète B, filmmaker Aude Léa Rapin (Les héros ne meurent jamais, in 2018) offers us an ambitious tale of anticipation. Two dimensions - real and virtual - coexist in a paradoxical prison film where the inmates are placed in a very... summery atmosphere. Jeanne Lapoirie, AFC, and her gaffer Guillaume Ader were responsible for the cinematography of this plunge into a 15-year future where the government has devised new means of incarceration to counter a group of young activists bent on defending the planet. The director’s second film is presented out of competition as the opening film of Critics’ Week at the 81st Venice Film Festival. (FR)

Composée des professionnels chargés de sélectionner le film français candidat à l’Oscar 2025 du long métrage international, la commission de sélection s’est réunie mercredi 18 septembre 2024 au Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC). Ses onze membres ont choisi le film Emilia Pérez, réalisé par Jacques Audiard et photographié par Paul Guilhaume, AFC.

Présidé par le réalisateur et scénariste Quentin Dupieux, le jury du 14^e Nikon Film Festival, dont la directrice de la photographie Élodie Tahtane, AFC, était l’une des dix membres, a décerné, samedi 27 avril 2024 au Grand Rex, quatorze prix parmi une sélection de 50 films finalistes. Avec comme thème imposé "Le feu", le Grand prix du jury a été attribué au film Le Plein, de Charlie Moreno, photographié par Teva Vetea, et, entre autres prix, celui de la Photographie au Foyer, de Laura Volcy, mis en images par Laurent Ganiage, Thibault Alcouffe, Tahah Al Aissi, Paul Gronen.

An adaptation of Vanessa Schneider’s story Tu t’appelais Maria Schneider, Jessica Palud’s second feature film, Maria depicts the destructive beginnings of actress Maria Schneider’s career. Through the reconstruction of a scene which caused a scandal in Bernardo Bertollucci’s 1972 film Last Tango in Paris, the director condemns domination and the abuse of power in the film industry, a subject that has become highly relevant and necessary. The cinematography, by Sébastien Buchmann, AFC, is a subtle reminder of the seventies, and revisits the film sets of that era. He reflects on this particularly captivating experience as a cinematographer. Maria is presented in the Official Selection, Cannes Première, at the Cannes 2024 Festival. (BB)

Here’s a full list of On Film winners at Cannes 2024 ! It was a great showing for film. Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor and Best First Film (Camera d’or) along with four winners in Critics’ Week and the winner of the inaugural Audience Award in Directors’ Fortnight.

For his first feature-length fiction film, director Jonathan Millet proposes a truer-than-life plunge into the contemporary hunt for a Syrian war criminal. A film about spies in spite of themselves, but above all a gallery of characters with looks damaged by exile and the atrocities of war. Belgian cinematographer Olivier Boonjing, SBC (already interviewed three years ago with Rien à foutre, by Emmanuel Marre and Julie Lecoustre, also at Critics’ Week) is behind the camera to direct this thriller set between Strasbourg and the Middle East. This film is presented in the opening session and is also a serious contender for the Caméra d’or. (FR)

Julien Colona’s first feature film, Le Royaume, tells the story of a young girl who discovers her father’s true nature, and tries to love him at all costs. The relationship thus forged resembles a journey of initiation along the roads of the Isle of Beauty. A film with Corsicans, shot in Corsica, by a Corsican filmmaker. With cinematographer Antoine Cormier, we immerse ourselves in the making of this two-faceted thriller. Le Royaume is in the Un Certain Regard Official Selection at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. After three years as a camera assistant, Antoine Cormier went on to light short films, music videos and commercials. His passion : shooting on film. When he met Julien Colonna on a commercial, they shared a passion for doing "well with little". (BB)
