Par Jean-Noël Ferragut, AFC

Press and video interviews

AFC Interviews at Lille’s "Series Mania" Festival Matias Boucard, AFC, reflects on the visual choices made for the Apple TV+ series “Carême”, directed by Martin Bourboulon
"Filming a period piece in a contemporary way", by François Reumont

Conversations with cinematographers

Shot over 80 days between November 2023 and April 2024, the new French mini-series on Apple TV+ recreates the Napoleonic era in a project that combines espionage, haute cuisine and politics. At the heart of the story, which evokes a pact with the devil, is an ambitious young chef who quickly achieves fame and success through his connection with Talleyrand. Matias Boucard, AFC, is the director of photography for this series - in association with Éric Dumont, AFC - directed by Martin Bourboulon (The Three Musketeers). Laurent Héritier, as gaffer, took care of the many electrical setups on location around Paris and in the studio in Bry-sur-Marne. Premiering at the Séries Mania Festival, the series will be available on Apple TV+ in late April. (FR)

Meeting with Alfonso Cuarón about the series "Disclaimer", photographed by Emmanuel Lubezki, AMC, ASC, and Bruno Delbonnel, AFC, ASC
"The weight of words, the impact of images" by François Reumont pour l’AFC

Camerimage 2024

To mark the grand release of his first series on the Apple platform, the multi-Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Roma, etc.) attended Camerimage to discuss his work and photographic choices with the audience. "Disclaimer" is a thriller in which a past event suddenly resurfaces, upending the very bourgeois life of the main protagonist (Cate Blanchett) and her family. Since its release in early November, the series has divided viewers and critics alike. Many argue that the two timelines explored by the filmmaker occasionally lack credibility and coherence, particularly with respect to the final resolution. Emmanuel Lubezki, AMC, ASC, and Bruno Delbonnel, AFC, ASC, shared the cinematography credits, each working on a specific part of the story. (FR)

The film is in the Official Competition at the 2025 Berlinale.

AFC Interviews at Lille’s "Series Mania" Festival Seamus McGarvey, BSC, ISC, ASC, and Joe Wright talk about filming the "M" series
"Humanising the evil", by François Reumont for the AFC

Conversations with cinematographers

For his first TV series in 20 years, British director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice, Anna Karenina) has chosen a kind of first-person narrative to depict the rise of fascist power. Taking distances from the pure historical reconstitution seen in Darkest Hour, his previous biopic about Winston Churchill, Wright’s series "M" plays out almost like a hypnotic and relentless show, with Luca Marinelli, now bald headed, regularly addressing the camera (Best actor Prize in Lille 2025). Once again is cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, BSC, ISC, ASC, behind camera. A longtime friend and collaborator of the British filmmaker, for this series. (FR)

Laurent Tangy, AFC, revient sur le tournage de "L’Amour ouf", de Gilles Lellouche
"Coup de foudre au temps du top 50", par François Reumont, pour l’AFC

Conversations with cinematographers at Cannes 2024

Simon Beaufils speaks about image and the directing of "Anatomy of a Fall", de Justine Triet
"Sun, snow, and a criminal court", by François Reumont

Conversations with cinematographers

Justine Triet’s (Sybil, Victoria) new film is multidimensional, layer after layer being progressively peeled away as the film progresses. Starting as a family drama involving a Franco-German couple and their visually impaired son, the film evolves around a series of characters, in the context of a high-profile criminal trial. Simon Beaufils created the images for this closed doors thriller, with 2.5 hours divided between a high mountain chalet and a courtroom. Anatomy of a Fall (Anatomie d’une chute) was awarded the 76th Palme d’or. (FR)

László Gaál uses AI to shoot Porsches in Ferrari land
"The humor behind the machine", by François Reumont

AFC’s Conversations

With humor, know-how and a disturbing quality, the fake Porsche advertisement “The Pisanos” produced by the Hungarian colorist László Gaál has become in recent days one of the stars of the AI film generation on YouTube. Made entirely on the Google Veo2 engine to which he was able to have early bird access, this little film is featuring almost all the clichés of advertising (Tuscany, smiles, speed, etc.) Disturbing by its quality and especially by its making-off, this second part takes eventually the viewer by surprise when we suddenly learn that everything was (almost) false. Laszlo, who gives himself the pleasure of talking to the camera - in the only shot actually filmed . lends also his voice to the commentary. He talks to us (with his lovely Claude Monet t-shirt) about creation with this new tool. (FR)

Philippe Rousselot, AFC, ASC, discusses his vision of the profession
By François Reumont for the AFC

Camerimage 2018

Philippe Rousselot, AFC, ASC, took advantage of his stay in Poland to participate in a number of events and seminars concerning cinematography. The former assistant to Nestor Almendros has become one of the legends of cinematography in France and abroad (John Boorman’s The Emerald Forest, Stephen Frears’ Dangerous Liaisons, and Patrice Chéreau’s La Reine Margot). The most relaxed and informal of these events was definitely the free-flowing discussion he had with the many attendees who came to listen to his vision of the profession.
