María Secco

Shot on the island of Chiloé, in southern Chile, Brujeria is a fantasy film in which history and politics intertwine in an unexpected and very animalistic way. Set in the late 19th century, at a time when European settlers were arriving alongside the newly formed Chilean state, the script depicts the rebellion of a native teenager when her father is unjustly killed by his German employers. 
This is the second feature film by Christopher Murray, a filmmaker whose academic work in anthropology inspired the subject matter. The cinematography is by María Secco, AMC, who is originally from Uruguay but lives and works in Mexico City. We talk to her about the making of this spellbinding story, which has been selected for the "Contemporary World Cinema" section at Camerimage 2023. (FR)

Tourné sur l’île de Chiloé, au sud du Chili, Brujeria est un film fantastique où l’histoire se mêle au politique dans un mélange inattendu et très animal. Se déroulant à la fin du 19^e siècle, à l’époque où des colons venus d’Europe s’y installent, en même temps que l’Etat Chilien tout juste naissant, le script met en scène la rébellion d’une adolescente native quand son père est injustement victime d’un drame chez ses employeurs allemands.
Un deuxième long métrage réalisé par Christopher Murray, cinéaste dont les travaux universitaires d’anthropologie lui ont inspiré le sujet. Les images sont signées de la directrice de la photographie María Secco, AMC, d’origine uruguayenne mais résidant et travaillant à Mexico. On discute avec elle de la fabrication de cette histoire envoûtante en sélection "Cinéma contemporain mondial" à Camerimage 2023. (FR)

Following Winter Brothers for which she earned the award for First feature film at Camerimage in 2017, the young Swedish cinematographer Maria von Hausswolff again joined forces with Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason on a drama that portrays a former police officer mourning the loss of his wife and who brings his young daughter along on an uncertain quest into the past. Alongside the impressive Ingvar Sigurðsson (for whom the film was written), the little girl (Hlynur Pálmason’s own daughter), and a visual landscape made up of gradients of fog and rain surrounding the coastal town of Höfn (which simply means “port” in Icelandic) in the south-western part of Iceland. Chaque année, la sélection "Premier long métrage à la photographie" propose quelques bonnes surprises. Après Juliette Van Doermael l’année passée, c’est la jeune DoP Maria von Hausswolff, venue de Copenhague, qui crève l’écran avec Vinterbrodre, un film étrange et pâle mettant en scène un groupe d’ouvriers en manque d’amour dans une mine de calcaire danoise. Un scénario assez impressionniste servi par le grain du Super 16 et un "sound design" extrêmement travaillé. Le réalisateur Hlynur Palmason et sa directrice de la photo se connaissent depuis leurs études et travaillent également tous les deux dans le domaine de l’art contemporain (sculpture et installations).

With the death of Michael Ballhaus, ASC, which occurred in Berlin on Tuesday, 11 April 2017 at the age of 81, cinematography has lost one of its most talented artisans. Director of Photography for Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Mike Nichols, amongst others, he constantly experimented during his forty-year-long career, filming each of his movies in a style that was often highly innovative. Whoever has seen The Marriage of Maria Braun will have been impressed by his impressive risk-taking, which was one of the great cinematographer’s hallmarks.

Avec la disparition de Michael Ballhaus, ASC, survenue à Berlin mardi 11 avril 2017 à 81 ans, la photographie de cinéma perd l’un de ses plus talentueux artisans. Chef opérateur de Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola ou encore Mike Nichols, entre autres réalisateurs, il n’aura eu de cesse, pendant près de quarante ans, d’expérimenter pour chacun des films qu’il a photographiés un style bien souvent novateur. Qui aura vu Le Mariage de Maria Braun, tourné à ses débuts, aura gardé en mémoire quelques belles prises de risque, un signe distinctif des grands cinéastes.

As in 2014 on 3000 Nights, by Mai Nasri, and 2015 on Dans les forêts de Sibérie, by Safy Nebbou, Gilles once again offers us two images per day, taken by him (unless otherwise stated) along with his commentary.
