83rd Venice Film Festival, 2026 Balthazar Lab, AFC, discusses the technical challenges of "Salón de belleza" ("Beauty Salon") by Nathalia Acevedo
By François Reumont for the AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

Adapted from Mario Bellatin’s eponymous novel , this "Salon de Belleza" is a rather mysterious plunge (both literally and figuratively) into a timeless universe where strangers await death. A film that unfolds like a timeless, mystical tale set between the world of the ocean and that of humankind. It is the directorial debut of Mexican actress Nathalia Acevedo (who made a name for herself in Carlos Reygadas’s Post Tenebras Lux, in 2012), selected for the Giornate Degli Autori section at the 83rd Venice Film Festival. Balthazar Lab, AFC, joins us to discuss this multifaceted and sensory experience. (FR)

83rd Venice Film Festival, 2026 Interview With Elin Kirschfink, AFC, SBC, about "Man’s Skin", directed by Léa Domenach
"A girl with a masculine style", by François Reumont for the AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

"Man’s Skin" (Peau d’homme), the best-selling comic book by Hubert and Zanzim published in 2020 (winner of some fifteen awards and adapted for the stage in 2023), is now a film. Director Léa Domenach (Bernadette, 2023) pays direct homage to Jacques Demy’s Peau d’Âne in her adaptation, casting Catherine Deneuve as the godmother (a contemporary take on the "Fée des Lilas", played by Delphine Seyrig opposite her 56 years ago). The young protagonist is now played by young French pop star Claire Pommet (Pomme). This queer medieval musical (much like the graphic novel on which it is based) explores questions of gender whilst offering a modern take on romantic relationships through the lens of a fantasy tale. Elin Kirschfink, AFC, SBC, was the director of photography for this film, which premiered as the closing film of the 2026 Venice Film Festival. (FR)

83rd Venice Film Festival, 2026 Fiona Braillon, AFC, SBC, looks back on the filming of "Diane in the Loop", directed by Ann Sirot and Raphaël Balboni
By François Reumont for the AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

"In this intimate western, where the vast, arid spaces to get through are those of the soul, we follow the rise to the surface of the ball of violence that was hidden in the recesses of the past" say Belgian directing duo Ann Sirot and Raphaël Balboni, introducing their new film Diane in the Loop. In this new project, they continue to explore relationships between men and women with their highly personal touch, blending surrealism, humour and, of course, jump cuts, as in Le Syndrome des amours passées (2023) and Madly in Life (Une vie démente) (2021), their two previous films. Cinematographer Fiona Braillon, AFC, SBC, is lensing this bittersweet revenge film set between Brussels and the North Sea, in which the characters wear stylish cowboy hats. Diane in the Loop has been selected for the 2026 Venice Film Festival in the Orizzonti section. (FR)

46th Manaki Brothers International Film Festival Olympia Mytilinaiou, GSC, reflects on her choices in bringing Alexandros Avranas’ "Quiet Life" to the screen.
Par François Reumont, pour l’AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

Directed by Greek filmmaker Alexandros Avranas, Quiet Life tells the story of a Russian family seeking political asylum in Sweden after the father narrowly escapes a political assassination attempt. With an extremely controlled colour palette on screen, playing on shades of grey and blue, director of photography Olympia Mytilinaiou, GSC, gives this story (based on real events) a feel reminiscent of science fiction cinema, in which the rights of refugees and the pathological situation of children send a chill down the spine. The film Quiet Life make premiere at section Orizonti at Venice and in competition at the Manaki Brothers 2025 Festival that won the Silver Camera 300. (FR)

46th Manaki Brothers International Film Festival Virginie Saint-Martin, SBC, talks about her working together with "Mother"’s director, Teona Strugar Mitevska
"Seven Days in Calcutta", by François Reumont for the AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

With Mother, Macedonian director Teona Strugar Mitevska offers a free interpretation of the seven days leading up to the founding of the Missionaries of Charity by Mother Teresa. Deliberately departing from the traditional codes of biopics, the film gives Swedish star Noomi Rapace to portray a the quite unknown young mother, before she became involved with Calcutta slums. Virginie Saint-Martin, SBC, is lensing this Belgian-Macedonian co-production, shot between Belgium and India. Mother opens the Manaki Brothers 2025 Festival after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. (FR)

82nd Venice Film Festival Director of photography Frida Marzouk, AFC, discusses her work on "Cotton Queen", a film that blends reality and fable by Suzannah Mirghani
"A fable on the banks of the Nile", by François Reumont for the AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

With her first feature Cotton Queen, filmmaker Suzannah Mirghani paints a portrait of a young Sudanese woman working on a cotton farm in a village on the banks of the Nile. The arrival of a new young boss with more modern working methods suddenly turns her life and that of those around her upside down. This is all the more significant given that her grandmother Al Sit, nicknamed the cotton queen, once led a revolt and emancipation against the former British colonisers... In this film, which begins in a rather naturalistic style, the choice of an increasingly dreamlike narrative gradually takes over and transforms the film into a feminist tale. Cinematographer Frida Marzouk, AFC, teamed up with the director on this first feature film shot in Egypt. Cotton Queen is being screened in its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in the International Critics’ Week selection. (FR)

82nd Venice Film Festival Marco Graziaplena, AFC, reflects on the challenges of filming Pietro Marcello’s "Duse".
"A documentary biopic", by François Reumont, for the AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

Eleonora Duse is considered one of the greatest actresses of the early 20th century, on a par with Sarah Bernhardt, with whom she shared a romance with a man : the great Italian writer Gabriele D’Annunzio. Director Pietro Marcello, author of a dozen feature-length documentaries and fiction films, offers in this new film a very free adaptation of the last years of the actress’s life, during the interwar period. A key period in European history that resonates today in these times of crisis and conflict. Marco Graziaplena, AFC, is lensing this film, which was shot like a period documentary, partly in Venice. Duse is in official competition for the Golden Lion at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. (FR)

82nd Venice Film Festival, 2025 Inès Tabarin, AFC, looks back on the filming of Laura Samani’s film, "Un anno di scuola"
"Nostalgia on the Adriatic", by François Reumont for the AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

Laura Samani decided to adapt Giani Stuparich’s novel "A Year at School" (1929) for the screen, which tells the story of a girl’s arrival at an all-boys high school in Trieste. Transposed to the late 2000s, the director makes the story her own, infusing it with her own memories and the music of her 20’s. Inès Tabarin, AFC, teams up for the first time with this transalpine filmmaker, working on screen on this nostalgia-filled film shot entirely in this Italian border town, which geographically marks the gateway to Central Europe. (FR)

82nd Venice Film Festival, 2025 Arnaud Potier, AFC, talks about his work on Gus Van Sant’s film, "Dead Man’s Wire"
"’Dead Man’s Wire’, a 1977 story inspires Gus Van Sant", by François Reumont for the AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

On February 8, 1977, in Indianapolis, Tony Kiritsis, a mortgage borrower, entered the offices of a local lending company and held its president hostage for 63 hours. Having tied the president’s neck to a cable connected to the trigger of a sawed-off shotgun, he denounced the irregularities of the mortgage system in the United States. This unusual hostage-taking, which received widespread media coverage at the time, had national repercussions and even led to changes in real estate lending practices. It is this true story that filmmaker Gus Van Sant decided to bring to the screen in a hard-hitting film shot in just 19 days in the middle of winter in Kentucky. Cinematographer Arnaud Potier, AFC, teamed up with the American filmmaker for the first time... The film will have its world premiere out of competition at the 2025 Venice Film Festival. (FR)

82nd Venice Film Festival, 2025 Tommaso Fiorilli AFC, SBC, discusses the black-and-white photography in Hugo Becker’s short film "La Ligne de vie" ("The Lifeline")
“The Darkness of the Trenches,” by François Reumont for the AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

With La Ligne de vie, director Hugo Becker (who is also an actor) took on a real challenge : recreating the atmosphere of the trenches of the Great War in a short film. This historical episode has been widely adapted for cinema, with references known to all that cannot fail to resonate in the minds of viewers. Thanks to the writing and the multiplicity of points of view, he starts from a simple news item and attempts to shed light on it, much as Akira Kurosawa experimented with in Rashomon. Tommaso Fiorilli, AFC, SBC, was responsible for shooting this short film, which was selected for Competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival. (FR)

81st edition of the Venice Film Festival Interviews with Elin Kirschfink, AFC, SBC, and director Carine Tardieu on the film "L’Attachement"
"Nothing is worth as much as life itself", by François Reumont for the AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

Selected in the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival, the fifth film by director Carine Tardieu deals with the theme of family ties, over a two year period following a tragedy. From its first scenes, L’Attachement is characterized by a mother’s loss, yet the film manages to avoid the pathetic thanks to the luminous, innocent performance of the character of Elliot by 6-year-old César Botti. Elin Kirschfink AFC, SBC, was director of photography for this film produced by Fabrice Goldstein and Antoine Rein (KarKaré Productions). (FR)

81st edition of the Venice Film Festival Interviews with Jeanne Lapoirie, AFC, and Guillaume Ader (gaffer) on the film "Planète B", by Aude Léa Rapin
“Adele’s Survival” by François Reumont for AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

With Planète B, filmmaker Aude Léa Rapin (Les héros ne meurent jamais, in 2018) offers us an ambitious tale of anticipation. Two dimensions - real and virtual - coexist in a paradoxical prison film where the inmates are placed in a very... summery atmosphere. Jeanne Lapoirie, AFC, and her gaffer Guillaume Ader were responsible for the cinematography of this plunge into a 15-year future where the government has devised new means of incarceration to counter a group of young activists bent on defending the planet. The director’s second film is presented out of competition as the opening film of Critics’ Week at the 81st Venice Film Festival. (FR)

81st edition of the Venice Film Festival Antoine Héberlé, AFC, discusses the shooting of "Aïcha", by Mehdi M. Barsaoui
"The woman who wanted to live her life", by François Reumont for AFC

Entretiens avec des directeurs de la photographie

At once the portrait of a woman, a tale and a political film, Mehdi M. Barsaoui’s Aïcha captures the mood of modern post Ben Ali Tunisia in the context of a multi-faceted thriller. While the journey of young Aya (Fatma Sfar) from her small town in southern Tunisia to the big city remains the main thread of the story, a host of secondary characters, both benevolent and malevolent, shape this coming-of-age tale in picaresque, social terms. Antoine Héberlé, AFC, returns to team up with the Tunisian director after his first film, Un fils, which won acclaim in 2019.

Aïcha has been selected in the Orizzonti section at Venice. (FR)

83rd Venice Film Festival, 2026 Interview with Antoine Héberlé, AFC, about Stéphane Brizé’s film "A Good Soldier"
By François Reumont for the AFC

Le Festival de Venise 2026 - 83e édition

With A Good Soldier, director Stéphane Brizé reunites with his favourite actor, Vincent Lindon, and a working environment he had previously explored in his famous trilogy (The Measure of a Man, At War, Another world).
With a streamlined narrative structure, the film centres on Carla (Alba Rohrwacher), a lively young divorced mother who has just landed a senior management position at Amali. She struggles to find time for her private life and the shared custody of her ten years old son. For whom she harbours great ambitions. Filmed almost exclusively on the company’s premises, the film is sometimes quite funny, offering in particular a very sharp portrayal of power dynamics within such a big company .
Antoine Héberlé, AFC, is the cinematographer for this film, runing for main competition at the 2026 Venice Film Festival. (FR)

83rd Venice Film Festival, 2026 Interview with Pierre Milon, AFC, about Robert Guédiguian’s "A Woman Today"
By François Reumont for the AFC

Le Festival de Venise 2026 - 83e édition

With Une femme aujourd’hui (A Woman Today), filmmaker Robert Guédiguian weaves a new tale centred on his hometown, Marseille. He also reunites his usual actors, entrusting them this time with supporting roles. Deliberately centred on youth and modernity through the main character of Juliette (starring young Marilou Aussilloux, who previously appeared in La Pie voleuse, in 2025), the film also deals with conflict between family and traditions. For the filmmaker, it is also another opportunity to film his city, through a more contemporary lens than usual. Pierre Milon, AFC, is once again his cinematographer for this film, which has been selected for the Giornate degli Autori section at the Venice Film Festival. (FR)

AFC conversations at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival Interview with Mátyás Erdély, ASC, HCA, about "Moulin", directed by László Nemes
By François Reumont for the AFC

Les entretiens au Festival de Cannes 2026

In 2015, László Nemes’s Son of Saul won the Cannes Grand Prix, launching the film’s international career (it went on to win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2016). It was an uncompromising project, set within an extermination camp and filmed in square aspect ratio using a subjective camera. Following two further period films screened at Venice (Sunset, in 2018, and Orphan, in 2025), the Hungarian director returns to the Croisette with Moulin, which recounts the 1943 arrest of the Resistance leader by the Gestapo in Lyon. And his interrogation by Klaus Barbie. A film written by Olivier Demangel and shot over 41 days, largely in and around Budapest, whose slow and inexorable face-to-face encounter between the victim and his tormentor leaves a lasting impression on the audience. Hungarian director of photography Mátyás Erdély, ASC, HCA, is lensing this rather oppressive film, presented in the Official Competition at the 79th Cannes Film Festival. (FR)

82nd Venice Film Festival, 2025 Manu Dacosse, SBC, reflects on the choices made to adapt François Ozon’s "L’Etranger" into black and white images.
"Exactly Under the Sun", by François Reumont, for the AFC

Le Festival de Venise 2025 - 82e édition

Bringing Albert Camus’ legendary first novel to the screen, François Ozon gives a very sunny adaptation of The Stranger. Choosing allthough a few liberties considering those 83 years that separate us from the book itself. For example, a flashback form of narration that contrasts with the original linearity of the text. And a more prominent female presence (Marie, Meursault’s girlfriend, the Algerian sister of the victim, and even the protagonist’s mother, who appears in one scene). This second version (after Luchino Visconti’s somewhat forgotten 1967 adaptation) also marks a desire to anchor the film in a recreation of 1950’s colonial habits. It is, of course, no coincidence that the film opens with the title of The Cure’s hit song "Killing an Arab", written in 1978 by Robert Smith as another Camusian variation. Manu Dacosse, SBC, is behind the camera for this black-and-white film, in competition at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. (FR)

Yves Cape, AFC, lets the script tell the story.

Memory sees Mexican writer and director Michel Franco push into new territory with a film that follows two characters who both have troubled relationships with memory. Jessica Chastain’s Sylvia is a social worker and recovering alcoholic with a history of sexual abuse while Peter Sarsgaard’s Saul is a widower suffering from dementia. The narrative weaves a story of uncertainty even as the two grow closer. Behind the camera was long-time collaborating cinematographer Yves Cape, AFC and the film opened in competition at the 2023 Venice Film Festival.
